How does one write the indicator function in TeX? I tried \mathbb{1}
but it returns gibberish.

a lot of people just use 1 or perpaps \bm{1} (bold 1, using the bm package)

Alternatively the dsfont (might be another name) package can give you a
doublestroke 1.

If anyone else needs it, I've found the answer: \bfo.

The Math Alphabets table in the Comprehensive LaTeX Symbol List
(http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/info/symbols/comprehensive/) presents
a variety of blackboard-bold "1" symbols including \mathbbm{1} -- see
which ones you like.
