In plain TeX, is there a way to change \baselineskip mid-document?
In particular, I'd like a several line `single spaced' heading,
followed by a `double spaced' text. Thanks for any help.

The baseline skip is just a <dimen> paremeter; you set it by saying
"\baselineskip=<dimen>". When formatting a paragraph, TeX uses the
value \baselineskip has at the end of the par. So, for example, to
set a paragraph with different baseline skip you might say:

\par % make sure previous paragraph is finished
\begingroup \baselineskip=\differentbaselineskip
This is the text to be set with baselines
\the\differentbaselineskip apart\dots
\par % make sure paragraph is finished
\endgroup

Hope this helps

Damian
