I have a book in pdf form broken into 5 pdf.001 .. pdf.005 sections.
How do I get one readable pdf file out of this?
Thanks

Unless you have a very different copy command to me, this won't even
slightly work.

The above copy command should work in any DOS/Windows OS.
I supposed, the files are split with a any split program like

http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/

To combine the files, the above copy command should be sufficient.
What doesn't work for you?

I think we are answering different questions. I do not know who of us
is right, so I will summarise, I hope correctly.

If the PDF files were split just into chunks, by a program like
hpsplit, they will not be valid PDF files, just pieces. The DOS copy
command can join them and should get back the original pieces.

However...

If the PDF book is in the form of separate PDF files, each of which is
a complete PDF, and can be viewed now, then the copy command will NOT
work. The poster would need a program designed to merge the contents
of multiple PDF files.

But then the names wouldn't be "pdf.001 .. pdf.005" but
"001.pdf .. 005.pdf".

Not exactly. There is no requirement for a PDF file to have the filename
extension ".pdf" (verified on this Windows workstation).

In addition, the OP did not specify whether or not each of the sections is a
valid PDF file; and furthermore, used different names for the sections in
the subject line and the body of his query.

Mr. Norton could help clear up this problem by simply staing whether or not
the sections are valid PDF files.
