Hi,

I have a pdf file in which 2 A5 pages are printed on one A4 page. I want
to split the A4 pages into A5 pages. Is there a way to do this? Perhaps
a command-line tool that extracts only parts of a pdf page?

pdftk could not solve my problem. I don't want to split a pdf into
individual pages. My problem is quite more complex. I want to cut one
DIN A4 page into two smaller DIN A5 pages. I need a tool that could take
boundingboxes or something similar as input and outputs only the part
laying inside the boundingbox as a new pdf!

A simple Split/Merge tool can't do that. Hope someone can help.

If you can program Java (or C# or VB.net)
this could easily be done with the library that is used
internally by PdfTk: iText (or iTextSharp)
assuming that the bounding box is defined somewhere
inside the pdf as a property of the page
(not just based on the content).

No, Pdftk *can* indeed be used to solve your problem. See, for example, the
article "Processing PDF using Grep or Sed " at
http://www.accesspdf.com/index.php?topic=pdftk (or simply click on the Pdftk
link and scan down the page to the beginning of the above article.

Suppose you have, as input, a landscape page with two portrait pages on it.
All you need to do is edit the appropriate boxes to produce a left half and
a right half of the input page. You should be able to do this with a shell
script, once you've figured out how to do it. All of the resources you need
are cited in articles on the Pdftk web site.

When I last did what you want, I used Vim with the Pdftk plugin to inspect
the input PDF to find the boxes I wished to edit. First time, through, I
edited the boxes manually in Vim. Next time through, I wrote a script to
automate the process.

Pdftk is much more than a simple Split/Merge tool. You can help yourself by
digging a little deeper in the material available on www.accesspdf.com. If
you have any questions on the use of Pdftk to do what you want to do, I'd
suggest you post your questions on the Pdftk web site.

Good luck.

See also, "Pdftk Simple Examples," where you'll find a similar query and
answer, e.g., "Pdftk Simple Examples

together with a link to the article I cited earlier.

If you are willing to use TeX (more precisely, pdflatex), you can do
this using the file
