We have just install interleaf v6 recently. I found v6 to be much much slower
than v5 running on the same machine (SUN SPARC with 24MB RAM). I wonder if
this is to be expected. Are there any tricks that people know (such as
closing all unused windows etc....) to speed up v6 to a point where I can
work with? (Getting new hardware is out of the question now for us.) Thanks.

We have Ileaf V6 installed on a DEC Alpha, and it s also very slow. I hope
the next release will be faster.
One reason might be that Ileaf needs a lot of main memory now (also because
they use Motif ) One thing you could do to speed up V6 is to increase your
main memory to at least 32 MB which is also recommeded by Interleaf.

I wonder if the interpreter is the one to blame.
It might be a way to compile the intallation so that we run binary instead of lisp?
But how?

You _are_ running compiled lisp. This is the default, and in any case,
the Lisp sources are available only with the Developers' Toolkit and
you have to go to some explicit effort to use them. In addition to all
that, most of the speed intensive code is written in C.

Memory is by far the biggest performance factor on small
workstations. I6.0.1 seems to typically use VM of around 20-22
mB. On a 24mB machine, this obviously will cause a lot of paging. I
would even believe Interleaf's minimum 32mB recommendation is too
small on Suns. By comparison, ileaf5.3 needs consumes 12 mB of memory on
my Sparcstation 10.

I have the impression that Interleaf knows in principle how to reduce
memory requirements on Suns, but that doing so requires calling Sun
libraries which may be less robust than their present memory
management.

Also, like virtually all software vendors, Interleaf has a long
history of making performance improvements for their second
release.

In article <36a48b$i...@engr.orst.edu>,

A couple of tips I got from Interleaf:

Turn off rulers and document components if you don't need them. This will
give you some improvement when you open docuemnts.

Turn off the pre-loaded help viewer. You can still get to the online
help, but it won't auto-start. This will give you some startup performance.

Keep your desktop and folders organized and uncluttered for better startup
and open performance.

Exit Interleaf nightly. There is a memory leak that will be corrected
in 6.1

Some personal opinion:

In your case, I would also look at doubling the ammount of RAM in the
box. 24MB is barely enough for a bare bones machine.

Another point that I have heard from somewhere is that version 6.1 is
going to be a performance release, and they havn't tuned 6.0.
