Hi

When I switched a lot of text that is in times roman
to gill sans, I noticed there is a lack of space after
periods, commas and the like (type entered with one space,
but is the same even with auto-spacing on in Framemaker 5.5).

Is this a known feature of this font ? Is there a way to
edit the font with Fontographer or the like to get around
this problem ? I can't just change the width of a space
because that would have a more global effect, but I guess
one could do something with the kerning of a period followed
by a space, etc.

One approach I was going to take was to add em-spaces after
every period rather than ordinary spaces, but this is pretty
annoying to do. I also couldn't find anything in the character
or paragraph style settings that controlled the amount of space
after punctuation.

I used the Gill Sans family (True Type) in a manual and did not have this
particular spacing problem. Space after periods was perfectly normal. Em and
en spaces appeared as one might expect.

Does your Gill Sans look okay in other applications? I had a different
spacing problem--too much space before italic, bold, small cap, etc. This
would only happen with Gill Sans fonts in Frame outputting PS.

If the font looks okay in other apps, and other fonts look okay in Frame,
you might try playing with your printer drivers. I finally resolved my
problem by installing the newest Adobe PS, using an older printer driver,
and selecting the TrueType download option Adobe's tech doc said *not* to
use. Go figure.

Hi,

Is pair kerning enabled? Another possiblity is that the kerning table
is damaged. Do multiple periods (.......) have the correct amount of
spacing?

I think I'd try removing the font from the disk and re-install it.

Cheers,

Mike.

The problem goes away if one turns off pair kerning, which I
didn't want to do. The font doesn't seem to be damaged, but
I will try reinstalling it anyway. Thanks ... david

I have seen this with Adobe's Gill Sans font. Some of the kerning pairs are
"aggressive" as David is seeing. This is a font issue, not an application
issue; I have used this font with QuarkXPress, Illustrator, etc., and have
had the same experience. It is not as much as an issue with XPress because
you can customize the kerning pairs for each font. My suggestion is to use
an application like Fontographer to open the font and recreate the kerning
pairs or use a different vendor's font. Otherwise, it is a nice looking
typeface.

Thanks Rick. This is very helpful information. It is Adobe's
font that I am using.

I will see if I can get another vendor's font, which is
probably going to produce better results than an amateur
like myself trying to tweak the kerning.

Are you using an ASCII text based font (pfa - a la UNIX) which you can edit
directly with a word processor, or are you using a binary font (pfb - a la
Windows) ?
If ASCII text based, you can simply change the font in FrameMaker by editing
the font's afm file and saving as text.
It sounds like your problem is caused by just one of the kerned pairs (the
period-space pair). If the problem is erratic then maybe there are some
other kerned pairs (space-letter) that also have the problem.

Thanks Dave

I am on a Mac, so messing with the kerning requires a tool,
there not being an ascii representation of the font metrics
hanging around. I can't decide whether to get FontLab or
Fontographer to mess with this.
