Make a copy of the document. Delete the last 200 pages from the copy and
then try to run it through your filter. If it goes, then the problem lies
int he last 200 pages. If it doesn't go, then start over with a new copy and
delete the first 200 pages. If it goes, then the problem lies in the first
200 pages. If it doesn't, then both halves of the document contain a
problem. At this point you might begin to suspect tables or section breaks.
Make another copy of your document and delete all tables from it. You get
the idea. Divide and conquer. Test one variable at a time. Good luck.

If not that, then how soon does the error message occur? When you Place
a file into Pagemaker a little window appears with a bar running from
left to right as the file is loaded. Does it stop instantly, or not
until near the end?
Are all the pictures in the same format and, if so, which one? If not,
that might point a finger at the culprit.
Have you done it before with any other Word document? If not, it might
be worth trying it with one without any pictures.

Adobe knows about this since the initial 5.5.0 release - they even
purchased a third party set of import filters for the 5.5.6 inline
release. Unfortunately, these filters still like to publish their own
doomsday edition of some documents from time to time ...
