I have thousands of smallish pieces of text which I used to store in
card indexes. I mostly need to view, edit and print these
independently. I used to use a Mac DA called AffiniFile which allowed
this and which had a 2-level menu of the items down the left hand side
of the screen.

Is there any standard software which does this? (The document map
option in Word is not quite right, as the items are not independent.)

There are a zillion freeware programs that do about what you are
asking for. I use SimBust Note Manager 2.0, which could be described
exactly as you write below. A Google, or ASK search for note manager,
notes, or sticky notes will get a gob of hits. The website Softpedia
has a dozen or more. They are small, often have no install to them,
and simply run out of the box.
