Is there Unisys documentation on line?
Is there any similarity between Exec-8 and OS2200?
Do they still use ECL?
What about things like CTS? Mapper?
Is there any value in digging out my old pocket guides?
Do they still us DMS-11?
Are there other databases used in the Unisys world today?
Is embeded SQl now the norm in programs?
Are there other questions I should have asked? :-)
Thanks.

Most of it is online, I think.
>Is there any similarity between Exec-8 and OS2200?
Yeah, it's still EXEC. They called it OS1100, and then OS2200 when
there were no more 1100s.
>Do they still use ECL?
Yes.
>What about things like CTS? Mapper?
Dunno about CTS, still use MAPPER (called "BIS" these days), on both
2200 and Windows.
>Is there any value in digging out my old pocket guides?
May well be- they're like hen's teeth!
>Do they still us DMS-11?

UTS, DMS1100, RDMS.
Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL (accessed from MAPPER, for instance, via MRI).
>Is embeded SQl now the norm in programs?
More so, but not uniquely. Working on a site at the moment still using
DMS, doing around 3,000 real-time banking transactions per second at
busy times.
>Are there other questions I should have asked? :-)
"Will Unisys pay me lots of money?"
"yes"

"Can I telecommute from somewhere other than Roseville?"
Dunno. But the number of people with 1100/2200 skills is declining, but
there are still some significant customers out there. I'm contracted to
Unisys at the moment providing OS 2200 support to a major site in the
UK, and they're looking for more- a few years back, it almost never
happened.
There have been a number of 8-figure Clearpath hardware purchases in the
UK in the last few years, so the requirement isn't going away any time
soon. Some of the customers are finally waking up to the fact that it's
a damn good platform.

Tsk. That's UDS, of course.

Are you talking about the ERs? Little has changed.
> Do they still use ECL?
Very little has changed
> What about things like CTS? Mapper?
CTS is dead. I have a Cassette here somewhere, a @CTS release tape
with a Y2K fix I wrote but I would not know where to find a drive
which could read it. MAPPER lives.
> Is there any value in digging out my old pocket guides?
Most will still be valid. CMS and TELCON are probably dead (not sure
about all sites)

UDS (introduced late 80's ?) supports:
- DMS (which has been renamed to something weird - Enterprise Database
Server ?)
- RDMS (you can use SQL on that)
- SFS (that is MSAM under UDS-Control)
in any combination. Universal Data System. The *how* has changed
over the years - especially if you knew DMS 8R3, 8R2 or older - but
the *what* is mostly downwards compatible. DMS 8R3 offered you around
30 000 - 50 000 words of page-buffer. With UDS the Administrator
configures how many million words it should be using and the Banks are
acquired dynamically when UDS starts up. Setting DMS areas UP and
DOWN has been moved from @DMU to the @IRU.
There is something you might not know called "Extended Mode" or UCS.
There are compilers for Cobol, Fortran and C. Your old MASM stuff
needs to be rewritten to interface with UCS, and Unisys don't tell you
how to do it. UCS offers much larger, multiple D-Banks. A lot of
stuff has been rewritten to use UCS rather than Basic Mode.

People are doing so now.
I was not actually talking about working directly for Unisys. Should
I be talking to them? I don't remember finding anything from Unisys
in any of my searches when I decided I was tired of the academic world
and wanted to get back to just being a programmer again.

From what I can tell, working for Unisys can mean one of two things:
* Working for Unisys, doing OS / language / other software engineering stuff
* Working for customer as Unisys contractor, doing system support /
application programming etc, as it seems you were interested in.
I'd be very interested in either of these scenarios, if I could do so from
the DC metro area (or close-by).
Did you have a particular location in mind? There's a company looking for
COBOL coders in Albany NY, via dice.com.
I don't see many (any?) 2200-related positions on the Unisys career search.
Is there a better place to look for these jobs?
