My customers all the time create printer backup files on a Libra 460 running MCP 17/SSR 58.1. We have the destination set to print on the printers attached to the customers Windows computers. All this works well.

Now one of my customers wants the printer backup files saved as PDFs. I downloaded and installed the program CutePDF Writer. This created a new printer driver called CutePDF Writer. In MCPPRT(running on the Windows computer), I changed the printer to this new printer (CutePDF).

When I print with other Windows programs, like Firefox, all works well. But then the Libra 460 is printing though MCPPRT, all I get is one blank page in the created PDF.

Has anyone had any luck creating PDF files from MCP printer backup files?

David,

You could try Print2Web, by GoldEye Software (http://www.goldeyesoftware.com/print2web.php) - you setup an MCP virtual printer and it can create TXT or PDF files on a Windows share.

Hi Dave -

You can also use the basic version of Depcon (Enterprise Output Manager) to create PDF's and if desired, email them to the requesting users. No third party software required except for your PDF client such as Acrobat and Win2PDF.

A problem with a lot of the low-end PDF engines is that they do not work
well from a Windows service. MCPPRT can be installed as both a user
program and as a service, so if yours is a service, that may be the problem.

I have a UNITE talk from 2012 that gives a detailed script for setting
up Enterprise Output Manager (EOM), and includes instructions for
configuring both email and PDF output. It describes using Win2PDF, but
should work with the Amyuni PDF Writer software as well.

http://www.digm.com/UNITE/2012/

Note that EOM releases for the past several years have the Amyuni PDF
Writer bundled with the license, but the PDF software is not included in
the release by default. It's a no-cost item, but you need to order it
separately.

Forgot to mention that Pretty Good Consulting Group publishes a
quarterly series of newsletters on EOM with lots of tips, tricks, and
general product information.
