I have just rescued a TI 990/4 mini from a dumpster and I would like
to get it back up and running. Its in generally good condition still
but has had its CPU and memory cards removed. Its a 13 slot chassis
version with programmers console.
Does anyone have a CPU or memory card for this machine that they would
be prepared to trade with me?
Many thanks,
Toby
The unit you have is one of TI's business computers. Depending on what used
to be in the chassis you'll need:
A 990/10 AU/SMI card pair for slots 1 & 2.
A 990/12 AU/SMI card pair for slots 1 & 2
A 990/4 card for slot 1
A 990/5 card for slot 1
I can't remember if the /4 or /5 card had on-board memory (it's been many
years). One of them would function as an entire system since it also had a
serial port on it.
For the /10 and /12 (and the /4 or /5 without on-board memory) a memory
controller in slot 3 and add-on memory boards in slots 4, 5, and 6 are
needed, as well as the external cables connecting the controller to the
add-on memory boards.
Does the chassis have any I/O cards? Either for the TI video terminals
(911's or 914's - a specific card for each terminal) or for the serial
terminals (940's or 931's - the same card would drive either terminal).
Note that a non-standard protocol was used for the communication. There
were emulators made for PC's - both by TI and third parties.
Out of curiosity, are you near South Carolina?
guntis.

This one is a /4. According to the build label the missing cards
occupied slot 1 and 2 and where the /4 CPU and a memory card. I
believe however a /4 CPU has some memory on board (2K I believe) so a
CPU on its own would get things going.
I/O card wise it has a pair of cards for talking with a 911, a floppy
controller, a EIA (RS232 I believe) card. I've got the keyboard from
the 911 terminal, but the display unit was junked before I could get
it.
I've setup a dedicated site to track my progress in getting the
machine back to life. I've posted a couple of pictures there. See
http://www.ti990.co.uk/
I'm afraid I'm quite a way (to say the least) from South Carolina as
I'm in the UK.
All the best,
Toby

I'm in Southampton, and have a smaller cousin of your TI 990 - a TM
990 (www.avjd51.dsl.pipex.com/tm990/tm990.htm).
Stuart.
I have a load of TM 990 stuff as well that I got at the same time. The
TI 990 was the development platform for the TM 990 machines.
All the best,
Toby
