Don't buy anything from Radio-shake they don't stand behind their products.
I'm glad I just found this out because I was about to buy 3 sets of radio's,
CB's, and those handheld business band radio's from radio shake this spring for
my tree business. I was also going to get those head walky-talkies so the
person in the buckettruck could talk to the people on the ground.

Does anyone know a good place to buy these products....don't say radio shake I
learned how they deal with these problems.

I must whole-heartedly disagree with you! Tandy stands firmly behind
their equipment. Here's an example:

I purchased (on lay-away) a Tandy 1000 RL and a CM-11 monitor. When I
went in to pick up this computer, I also bought a Seagate 40 MB hard
drive (Tandy SmartDrive). I got the computer home and proceeded to
install the hard drive. Unfortunately, the computer refused to format
the drive. So I took back my computer the next day and they replaced
the hard drive and installed all the software. About 2 weeks later, the
second hard drive died and I again took back the computer. The machine
was at the shop when they advertised the 1000 RLX with 40 MB hard drive
and VGM-220 monitor for $80 less than what I paid for the RL. They
promptly refunded me $80 and sent me home with the RLX. This computer
never had any kind of problem what-so-ever. 2 months passed and they
advertised the 1000 RSX with 52 MB hard drive and VGM-220 for the same
price I paid for the RLX. Remember that you only get 30 days money back
guarantee. I called them and they told me that they would gladly take
back my RLX which was now $300 less than what I paid for it and give me
an RSX and not charge me anything. The sales people have always been
pleasant and the service department is top-notch. I now have a Tandy
3100 (I sold my RSX) and have never had any problems at all with it.

Scott,

I'm sorry to hear about your problems. Before you denounce all Radio Shacks,
you should know that they vary a lot from place to place. Some RS's are
company-owned and some are franchises. Some have people that know their
stuff, and some don't. Your best bet is to try a Radio Shack in a large
city in a busy location; they generally have the best staff.

By the way, the president of Tandy Corp. has been known to answer his mail
personally. He is committed to making Tandy more consumer-friendly, and has
been credited by the Wall Street Journal with turning the company around. If
someone out in the field hasn't gotten the message yet, I'm sure he would like
to hear. (Does anyone have the address?)

As a former RS manager, I'm forced to agree on certain products, as how
they handled the TRS-80 line of computers. As far as their radios, I
never noticed any lack of support, however.

In a previous article, medha...@cobra.uni.edu () says:

I must admit I've had mixed experiences myself. It has varied from store
to store though. I don't even buy a battery at the one at the local
mall, but am very loyal to the one at a local strip shopping center.

I stopped going to the one at the mall when I had to return an $8
adapter I had bought the night before. I misplaced the receipt but
the clerk I had bought it from knew me but was busy. The package was
not opened. I The celk told the manager I had bought it the night before
and asked him to take care of me, as he had a customer. The correct
adapter was only $3. The manager said he couldn't give me a credit, I
could only exchange even or take a credit for something higher priced
that same day. He then told me that I probably had bought it on sale two
months before and was just trying to scam him.

Needless to say I haven't been back. In another store I had a case of
them not exchanging some mismarked software. The software said it would
run in 640K but inside it said it needed 2mb. At that time they told me
it was ahgainst federal law to take back opened software. I happen to
write on copyright law, etc., and asked to see their source. Suddenly
"it had been around here just a minute ago."

Still the one at the strip mall has been wonderful. They exchanged one
item 11 times and then got a new shipment and opened all the packages
themselves and checked them before calling me.

Well guys, you are all correct.
^^^
Tandy has the policies and procedures available to be perfectly friendly,
reliable, trustworthy, and absolutely stand-up to customers. But the
people they hire aren't always up to it, and even good guys have bad
days.

Finding a good Tandy store is like finding a good doctor. The trial and
error can be really painful.

Yes indeed! It's getting hard to find those stores with employees who know
basic electronics, but there still are some out there.

Scott,

As a former Tandy employee I can assure you Radio Shack WILL make you
happy if you have a *reasonable* request (company owned stores, that is).
If the store manager does not give you satisfaction, ask for the district
manager's name and phone number. The store manager MUST provide that
information. Once you contact the district manager, bet'cha get what you
want.

Give it try this way before you flame RS. Yes, I know there are a lot of
duds working for the Shack--there are duds working everywhere.

Also, find another store, the managers get a piece of the action. Do not
give the dud manager YOUR action. Find one that appreciates your business.
There really are some good ones out there. BTW, I know of one manager who
was looking for work after just ONE improperly handled customer complaint.

If you are still unhappy with the Shack, write to:

John Roach, CEO
Tandy Corp.
One Tandy Center
Fort Worth, TX 76100

The President of Radio Shack is Mr. Lenard Roberts
400 Atrium--One Tandy Center
Fort Worth Texas 76102
I have to agree with you Mr Roberts will answer your letters. If you
have any problem at all, he would like to know. Many of the management
people are not of the the quality that a first class company would like.

I too, have found that their tech support is lacking when contacting
Computer Support. Last spring I purchased an Omni II 486/dx2 from
one of the local mall stores. For anyone who has not heard of the
Omni series, it is a factory direct unit that is built to customer
specs. The quality of the equipment is very high, but I have had
many questions about system configuration and specifications go
unanswered, due to lack of training on the part of Tandy Tech
Support.----So I know what you are saying. What I did find was the
best method of getting what I needed was to go up the chain of
command one by one. First start with the store manager, then the
district manager and on to the district manager, until you get the
attention of some one who is in a postion to get a job done and
help.

Failing all of that, give Mr. Roberts a letter detailing the
problem and the managers that had not resolved the problem.
I'm sure, from past experiences with Radio Shack, things will
get solved.

BTW, a letter about an employee who had gone out of his way
to be of help, might also be nice to have Mr. Roberts find out
about.

******And NO----I have never worked for Radio Shack!

Jeffrey,
Do you need the address of the president of Radio Shack (Leonard Roberts), or
the CEO of Tandy (John Roach)? Tandy Corp. doesn't have a president....

Either way, the following address of the Executive offices would probably work
if you put their name in the address:

1900 One Tandy Center
P.O. Box 17180
Ft. Worth, TX 76102

Hope this info helps...

Dear Scott,

It's a shame that you had a bad experience with Radio Shack. Please let
me ask: Was it a franchise store or a real Radio Shack? I'm not
defending Tandy but I don't believe one bad experience should be shared
and cast a bad light on the many nice people I have dealt with over the
years that work for Tandy. HAVE you gone all the way to the top man with
your complaint? If not, YOU SHOULD! A franchise store has less
incentive to stand behind something that they are just a dealer for
anyway. By the way, where is Iowa anyway? ;-)

Scott, no offense meant by my post. It's just that there are a lot of
people who would have never been able to afford a computer without the
larger company credit dept. advantage or find a 10k ohm resister in (of
all places) Iowa.

No, that's the address for Tandy Customer Service. Expect a service 'droid
to answer anything sent there. His real address is at a much
higher altitude:

Mr. Leonard Roberts
President, Radio Shack
1900 Tower I - One Tandy Center
Fort Worth, Texas 76102

You can also try this lovely EMAIL address, unless they
have changed it:

lro...@mhsgate.tandy.com

John Roach address is the same and the EMAIL should be

j...@mhsgate.tandy.com

If you use EMAIL be sure to include a US Postal address. Don't
expect an EMAIL reply, partly because the Tandy EMAIL system is a
clunker, but mostly its because the recipients of your mail don't really
understand the net and what it does.

Before you look, Tandy has no FTP sites, no WWW servers, etc.
