This archive was started in October of 1994 and continues to grow. For more
details about this archive, get the README file in /pub/trs/xenix. Before
attempting to compile source code get and install the packages:
gwynlb.shar.gz and string.exe.tgz
For 3.0 users trying to compile source code with long identifiers or 3.2
Xenix users trying to decide when to use the "-+" "cc" option,
get the following files: clash.exe.tgz, hash8.shar.gz, and shortc.tar.gz
"get" gunzip.exe first, so you can uncompress the files on you own machine.
NO, I DIDN'T GZIP THE gunzip.exe FILE! I just hate it when I see files
called zoo.zoo, zip.zip, etc -- real funny!:-)

Doesn't work so well for me.
Which is why I asked if anyone had a copy. Or are there any other tandy
archive sites around? I found one in France that had the model 1 branch
of Musie archived but ziltch (or would that be xiltch) for anything in
the model 16 branch.

Some years ago I was desperately seeking a mirror of the archive not that
long after it was pulled down. I wanted to port the stuff to UZI280 since
most of it had source code. It would have been a nice small code base to
start from rather than trying to shrink linux code. Back then, and once
or twice since, you can probably find my name on this newsgroup looking for
the archives and getting replies like "this guy said he'd give me a copy and
I'm still waiting for him" but nothing ever emerged. Alas. If you find any
of the stuff, bring it on....
CHeers,
Shawn
I had donated that machine two years ago to a local friend of mine who
for years has been gathering all manner of computing equipment in the
hopes of opening a computer museum some day, with parts of the museum
being hands-on and interactive.
I myself am not familiar with Xenix. At one time I had considered
learning it since I had come into possession of a TRS-80 Model 16B
around 1993, as well as a later version CPU and Xenix 3.2 (if memory
serves, that was the last officially released version of Xenix from
Tandy), along with a hi-res graphics card. I had at one time thought
about trying to program some hi-res graphics on that machine (just for
fun), since that last version of Xenix had a separate library of
graphics functions which could be used with the hi-res card. But when I
saw the lack of any real in-depth documentation for that purpose, and
when I began to realize just how much time I'd have to spend wading and
wading through binder after binder of a foreign operating system which
really was more suited for multiple users and business applications, and
on top of that, when I was not able to locate a reasonably-priced MMU
(memory management unit) and three 1-MB RAM cards (since 3 MB of RAM was
the minimum I'd need), I finally abandoned the whole idea after all
these difficulties and decided to just use Visual Basic on a Pentium
box. While there was no nostalgia involved in using an 'antique'
machine with monster 8" drives, at least I then had the option of ultra
hi-res color graphics, all the RAM I needed, no unfamiliar operating
systems to learn to add to the complication of programming in BASIC, and
complete portability of my programmed images to modern paint jet
printers and film recorders.
The man I gave Steve's machine to (with all the stuff on its internal
hard drive), would have to dig it out of storage and then try to learn
some aspects of Xenix himself since he is also not that familiar with it
(or with Tandy computers in general). I'll forward your e-mail to him,
and if he can respond to your request, I'll probably have to leave that
to him. He is generally an extremely busy guy with a chronically packed
schedule, so don't hold your breath. What I suspect is that when the
museum becomes operational, which unfortunately is probably at least
several years from now yet, then such a request for a Tandy Xenix
archive would be far, far easier to respond to. If he can find the
time, and if he can locate the machine from among his 12 storage
locations (and then dig it out), then perhaps with some telephone
hand-holding from Steve Scrivano, he might be able to send you what you
need. But right now, it's a long shot. A very long shot.
Perhaps the best bet would be for me to bring the machine back to Steve
on one of my trips down to Denver. Steve would be much more able to
remember what was where on that hard drive and retrieve what you're
looking for. But that still requires locating and unearthing the
machine, and that depends on my other friend's schedule.
Sorry I can't be more encouraging. If something positive develops, I'll
let you know.
