Awhile back I recall seeing that several LT 1400 owners had installed
a Zip Drive as a supplement to their floppies. Any instructions on how
to do this, and any particular models of drives? Also, does anyone
know where I can find a copy of the official Tandy MS-DOS 3.2 manual?
Thanks.

You'll need a parallel port Zip drive. And DOS 3.31 (*not* 3.3 !!) or
later, as the earlier versions don't support partitions above 32 meg.
Which means that the Zip drive isn't accessible, unlerss you find a way
to partition it.

I've got one, but it'd be a *big* hassle to scan it or xerox it.

Yep.

As the 1400 LT has nothing build-in as far as software is concerned (no
ROM) you can use any DOS that works on an XT, including Windows 95 ;-)

I have it running like a charm on DR-DOS 7.02, freely dowloadable.

We really have to try that: partitionning a ZIP drive to make it work under
DOS 3.3 or lower. Crazy idea. I'm going to do it, one of these days.

Who needs that ? Any good book on DOS will do.

Hmmm.......I've always thought this impossible as the 1400LT's parallel port
wouldn't seem to support it. Looking over the service manual and schematics
(handy things to have), it doesn't appear to be bidirectional.

A couple of questions.....

1. What version of the ZIP drive DOS drivers are you using? Any other
specifics would be appreciated, all I can get is a locked-up machine.

2. How do you handle the system clock under versions of DOS other than the
original that was patched for the 1400's non-standard clock? Seems like it
is always a day off otherwise.

OK. I figured it out and here is the info ...

You can use an Iomega Zip 100 parallel port drive on an 1100FD (and
many
other 16-bit Tandy machines for that matter). The drivers can be
shrunk
down to a minimum:

1. You need a bootable floppy for DOS 5 or above. I used PC DOS 7
from
IBM because I run OS/2 on my other box and PC DOS 7 includes Rexx
script support.

2. Copy the SETUP_11 file from your original Tandy 1100FD disk to the
new boot disk. Run SETUP_11 and change the primary boot device to
DISK from ROM. Save the changes with F1.

3. Copy the following files from the Zip install disk to the boot
floppy:

GUEST.EXE The guest driver
GUEST.INI The ini file telling it to use PPM1 driver
ASPIPPM1.SYS The parallel port comm driver
NIBBLE.ILM A resource file required by ASPIPPM1.SYS

4. Edit the ini file and remove the ASPI calls for all drivers other
than ASPIPPM1.SYS (you may rem then out instead of deleting if you
wish).

5. Hook up the Zip and reboot with the boot floppy.
5A. Run GUEST.EXE. I suppose this was so obvious I forgot to type it.

6. After a few moments of searching, the driver will assign the drive
to letter C. The ROM will not be available, so you'll need DM on
disk and not the DM that came with the machine if you plan to use
Deskmate.

7. The first dir of the drive will take a while. This is common for
XT's using slow drive access -- I think it reads the FAT fully the
first time. After that, the drive is usable, though a little pokey
as would be expected. The performance seems to be comparable to
that of the Microsolutions Backpack floppy drives.

Leave the boot disk in the drive. Some programs expect to find
COMMAND.COM. I suspect that you could sys the Zip cartridge to
get around this (it won't be bootable but it may be enough to
fool the occasional search for COMMAND.COM).

I tested a Zip install disk of v5.2 and v3.x. Both worked OK.

The Zip drive seems to be a great solution for extending the life of
these
tough XT laptops.

Actually, you should copy *all* the ILM files. NIBBLE.ILM works on
everything that a ZIP drive will run on, but it's also the *slowest*
one. You need to find out if one of the other ILM files will work. If
one does, then use that *instead*. After all, you are making this for
a
*specific* machine, you you might as well "tune" it for the best
performance on that system.

Try editing GUEST.INI to use one of the other ILM files. It'll either
fail, or work. If it works, you have a better setup. :-)

You can just copy COMMAND.COM to the C: drive, and in autoexec.bat
(*after* the zip drive installs) do a SET COMSPEC=C:\COMMAND.COM
This will usually result in COMMAND.COM reloading from the ZIP drive.

I used to be stuck with a flaky 486 motherboard that wouldn't boot
with
an HD attached. So I used a ZIP drive and booted from a floppy.

Well, I never had the schematics so I didn't read them, I just went ahead
and did it. ANd it worked, fine.

Iomega Guest Driver Version 3.1

Are you using DOS 3.2 ?

Better try to get hold of a MS-DOS 5. Smaller footprint as a DOS 4, and
very well documented. Like I said, there is no need to stick to Tandy's DOS
3.2, not for an 1400LT. The only utility that is specific for that machine,
is RAMDISK.SYS, that wants to run on DOS 3.2 only. OK, and then you use the
SETVER-utility, and it works...

I'm just using GUEST that came with my drive. But I do have one of the
early drives, not the 'Plus', that was abandoned, or the normal 100 that
came after that, and where the firmware was changed in such a way, that it
didn't work with OS/2 Warp anymore...

It is also possible to use the TSR programs that load from your config.sys.
But in order to do that, you first have to install it on a machine that
does have a HD, see how it installs, and then copy everything towards your
A: bootfloppy.

> 2. How do you handle the system clock under versions of DOS other than
the

Huh ?? I run DRDOS 7.02, and I ran MSDOS 5.0, and never had a problem with
the date.

> Seems like it is always a day off otherwise.

Nope, spot on. Only, no DOS finds the time on that machine, so I put TIME
in my AUTOEXEC.

The only way I know of that DOS 3.2 for the 1400LT was doctored, was in the
drive definition. On an XT, with a standard DOS, any drive defaults to 360
KB, unless otherwise specified. No need to do that on a Tandy MS-DOS 3.2,
but you do need to do that with any other DOS 5, 7 ...

> Kerr

TO ANY BODY INTERESTED: I can send you my bootable floppy-image that runs a
ZIP-100-drive on DR-DOS 7.02. Mail me, and I reply with the files attached.
The image includes a gif-viewer, a file-utility, a tiny editor and a full
DR-DOS 7.02.

Earliest I have is 4.something.

Tried it with that, yes. I have 3.3 from the 1400FD/HD line. I'll try that
or DOS 5.

As I recall, that particular RAMDISK.SYS is patched to use the 128K of
Extended Memory (Upper Memory, actually) on the 1400LT. AFAIK, no other
RAMDISK/VDISK will use that memory.

Don't have the Plus, but might have the newer firmware.

> Only, no DOS finds the time on that machine, so I put TIME

That was what I was referring to. The 1400LT uses a non-standard (well,
non-IBM-standard) clock, and the DOS that comes with it is patched to find
it. I did once run across a "Utlities Package" on Compuserve that had a
little file to read and set the clock under a different version of DOS.
Wish I could find what I did with it.....

> The only way I know of that DOS 3.2 for the 1400LT was doctored, was in

Yes, the translating controller that a lot of 720K laptops used. Some
programs needed the "DRIVPARM" command in CONFIG.SYS to recognize the
internal floppy drives correctly. FORMAT was patched to default to 720K,
and needs the "/h" to format disks in the Weltec external drive to 360K. If
you don't, it seems to keep looking for tracks past 39, and really sounds
bad doing it.

Just out of curiosity, did you buy your 1400LT new, or used? I got mine new
in 1989, and a couple of months later got the internal 1200 Baud modem.
Compuserve was fun at 1200 Baud.

Ah well, just try it.

Won't work. Maximum partition size is 32 MB.

Compaq DOS 3.31 or any DOS above and including 4.0 will take it.

Like I said, smallest footprint, stable, ... Best.

Correct. No problem working it with DRDOS 7.02

Go for it.

There is really no problem: once you do put TIME in the machine, it keeps on

I do that.

I made a batchfile called F720.BAT, where I pass all the parameters.

Yea, but it's a little bit of a pain to do that every time.

I'm in the same boat with a 2800HD a friend gave me. He lost the original
disks, and had reformatted the hard drive and installed DOS 5. I have found
the Setup program, but that's it.

I also recently acquired a 1400FD and 1400HD. But, alas, the FD boots but
won't display, the HD will display, but the hard drive seems to be whacked.
I've tried swapping displays, but it seems the FD's problem lies on the the
mainboard. The HD's hard drive will spin up, then spin right back down. It
just sits there with the hard drive light blinking. Oddly enough, I have a
copy of the original disk for these, as a friend at RS let me copy it many
years ago.

I've thought of swapping parts with the LT, but it seems the LT is a Citizen
design, and as I recall the FD and HD are relabeled GridCase 140 machines.
At least that's what an old copy of PCM Magazine said. In any case, the
MoBos are different. If the HD's hard drive worked, I might try it in the
LT anyway.

Well, unless we follow up on that twisted idea to partition a ZIP-disk as a

Just leave it out, and work without it. And by the way, the time IS
registered, and keeps on running correctly, because how else do you account
for the fact that the date is always right ?

For me, that is a very small inconvenience. I have to do it with my model
4P every time, so why not with my 1400 LT ?

There is really no problem if there is nothing IN the machine that's
Tandy-specific, like the DOS-and-Deskmate-in-ROM from the 1000(x)L and
1100FD and 1500HD. If there isn't, you just have to have the utilities that
are specific to that machine's hardware, like the RAMDISK-utility from the
1400 LT.

Don't know about that, what if the Grids are relabeled Citizen designs ?
The FD and HD are different from the LT, but not THAT different. They do
seem to come from the same 'farm'.

> In any case, the MoBos are different.

There are even different LT MoBo designs. I know of a LT, LT(A) and maybe
an LT(B), from the manuals I've got.

> If the HD's hard drive worked, I might try it in the LT anyway.

Don't. I have seen some HD's - never had an FD - and the HD/controllerboard
is unreliable by design. If you've got one that works, treat it with
gloves.

Yea, the RTC continues to run and keep time, but the newer DOS version's
just don't read it correctly, at least on the version of the 1400LT I have.
(In reference to the different versions you mentioned).

No Deskmate-in-ROM, but it has non-standard architecture. First of all,
it's a 286, and has 1MB of memory on the motherboard, and is expandable to
2MB. But it doesn't have an A20 line, so HIMEM.SYS doesn't load. (One of
the 1000's was like this.) I believe it had a proprietary EMS driver to
make use of the memory, but I'm not sure, since I don't have the original
software. (Still haven't made it to RS to try to order it.) I haven't
tried my 1400LT boot disk in it to see if the RAMDISK.SYS would use it.
Worth a try, I suppose.

Hmmmm.....could be.

It doesn't, unfortunately. Just spins up then stops. Guess it's already
bit the big one. And the FD's display controller seems to be hosed. So I
have two doorstops.

The Tandy 1000 TX, 1000 TL, TL/2 and TL/3 are 286 machines which
won't use the HIMEM.sys drivers. I tried it on the 1000 TL/2 and it
won't load.

Like wich ones ?

RAMDRIVE.SYS seemed like the only thing I needed. For the rest, AFAIK, the
machine behaves like a standard PC with a CGA-card and a monochrome
composite video. Hooking up an CGA-monitor is no problem ('MODE CO80',
MODE.COM by DRDOS 7.02)

So wich other programs do I need and what options can I activate with them

I find the following non-MS programs on the original disk:

CACHE.COM - Pretty obvious, it's a cache program.

DC.COM - Some sort of file compression program.

DISKOPT.COM - Disk optimizer. (Defragger).

LF.COM, LPDRVR.SYS, LPSETUP.COM - Printer control programs.

PATCH.COM - For patching something.

RCRYPT.COM - File encryption program.

None of these is documented in the manual, however. I discovered their uses
by trial and error.

The non-standard switches to some of the regular DOS commands that are
documented:

"FORMAT /H" for formatting the Weltec External 5 1/4" drive.

"MODE FAST" and "MODE SLOW" would control the CPU speed.

They are documented in the *addendum* to the manual that I have.

Well, here's the directory of a 3.5" DOS 3.20.03 floppy. With some
comments where I recall details (I can't dig out the manual at the
moment as I broke my left arm today, and it's buried under stuff I can't
shift one handed.
