NEC computers seemed to follow Tandy's closely for a while. The
PC-8001A was a model 1 clone. The PC-6001A or "NEC Trek" was
practicaly a Z80 version of the CoCo 2. The PC-8201A was based on the
Kyocera KC-85 just like the model 100. The PC-8300 was a thin version
like the Tandy 102.
The PC-8500 was quite a bit different from the Model 200- 64k, CP/M-80
2.2, 80X25 text, etc. But the software in rom seems to be similar, and
I saw a picture in Portable 100 magazine that showed what appeared to
be a 3.5" sigle drive version of the TRS-80 DVI! What peripherals did
NEC sell for the 8500? Was there a 3.5" portable disk drive from NEC?
Is this even the right newsgroup for NEC laptops?
Come on, I can't be the only old laptop fan on this newsgroup. Can't
anyone compare the M200 & PC-8500 in detail?
Mmmm, I am a frequent user of the Model 200 laptop, but lacking knowledge on
thr PC-8500 from Nec I rule myself out of such attempt to compare.
The Model 200 has been used mostly in commercial broadcasting operations
support, from the tedious transmitter equipment data logging to satellite
equipment programming (through the RS232 port and built in TELECOM app). As
I write this my M200 sits quite far away in southern Arizona as I did not
had room for it as I began relocation to the NY area :-(

Sounds like you can comment on it's use as a terminal, though. How is
it? Ever have any conflicts with the text resolution, or can the
program deal with that?

I understand, and I know exactly how you feel. I'd be tempted to
hitchhike back and get it.
