Our local school district has a bunch of old TRS-80 machines that
could possibly be used as terminals. Are there any terminal emulators
(ie. VT100) that work with the TRS-80? Or can't someone suggest a
place that I look? (I tried to find a FAQ, but no luck.)

It depends on *which* "TRS-80" they have. The Model I and Model III
only have 64 column by 16 line displays, which makes it rather
difficult to emulate most terminals. The Model 4 has 80x24, so it can
emulate normal terminals.

All of the above have 5.25" drives.

The Model II, 12, 16, 16B, and 6000 all have 8" drives, and all have
80x24 displays.

There are emulators available for the systems with 80x24 screens. There
are some for the ones with the smaller screens, but they tend to get
*really* annoying, since you are trying to display things bigger than
the viewing area.

What Model number are the TRS-80s?

Need TRS-80 Software? FTP://limpia.kjsl.com/tandy/m1-3-4/
This server is available at night.

Anyone.. is there a dedicated TRS-80 model 1-3-4 newsgroup?

Thanks for any help.

Which models? There are terminal programs for most all of them, but depends
on what you want to do.

For instance, years ago I wrote a VT52 program (and maybe a VT-100 program)
for the CP/M based Models -II, -12-, -16, and -6000. There are two
limitations:

1) No smooth scroll (minor problem)
2) No keypad editing (major problem)

The guy who designed the keypad without separate code capability made a big
mistake!

Idjits. Makes it useless for me... I'm in Australia, and PST 11pm to
PST 6am is _somewhat_ inconvenient. ;-)

If anyone wants a VT100 emulator for TRS-80 Model 4/4p, mail me.
I wrote one a while back. Can't remember if I put it up for FTP
anywhere though.

Okay, I'll open up the server during the day. I'll ask that US users
stick to the evening hours, in fairness to the foreign users with
large time differences.

Please note: I do need to use the Internet link for work stuff, so if
it gets too much in the way, I'll have to restrict it again. So, US
users, please log in after hours. Thanks.

Note that I will appear to originate from .dec.com, even though I am in
Australia. Our gate is over there.
