I'm currently running Guardian90-C30 on a hybrid configuration of VLX
and Cyclones. My backup listing says that file "x" is on the fifth
tape of a multi-volume backup. However, when restoring file "x",
restore asks for tape 6. I mount tape 5 and restore says "Incorrect
volume", I mount tape 6 and restore can't locate the file. I've tried
restoring other files in this backup with the same results. I've also
tried changing drives. Any thoughts?

Lastly, how does restore know where a file is located in a backup?
What causes restore to ask for tape 6?

Thanks.

Hello:
I think your problem might be related with the fact that your file is
located on both tape 5 and 6. That's the reason why I might be asking you
for tape 6.
Regarding the backup format, I think that backup writes a tape catalog "on
the fly". What I mean by this is that it writes a tape header (i.e. Tape
#3, #tape #4, backup date, etc) and after that it writes a file header
before every "actual" file. That's the reason why you have to mount ALL the
tapes whenever you do a "LIST ONLY" restore.

I hope this helps.

Did you "personally" run the backups... we've had many experiences where
our operators mislabeled tapes, re-used tapes, etc ??

Did you list out the contents of the backup tapes?
See exactly what is on the tapes and when the backup was run...
RESTORE /OUT $S.#LIST/ $TAPE,,LISTALL

Restore does not know where any of the files are... or even what files
are on the tape,
it asks for tape6 after tape5.
