Sorry if this is really dumb. But I was just wondering if someone
could reply to this.

No, Guardian is not HP-UX. HP-UX is a more-or-less traditional Unix. Guardian is the Guardian personality of the NonStop OS. The only relationship between them that I know of is that they both run on very similar hardware. The hardware that NonStop OS runs on is a slight modification of the hardware that HP-UX runs on -- NonStop OS requires a special interconnect known as Servernet. HP-UX does not use Servernet. Otherwise, the hardware platforms are the same, though HP-UX might support some peripherals that NonStop OS does not support. (I am not familiar with HP-UX.)

Guardian is one of the two personalities that the NonStop OS presents to users. The other NonStop OS personality is a POSIX system called the OSS personality. Perhaps you heard or read something about the OSS personality of NonStop OS and thought it was talking about HP-UX?

No. Guardian is not a Unix-like or Unix-based OS.

One source of information about Tandem and Guardian is

Hello Gaby!

There are no dumb questions. You might get dumb answers, though, but not in this group!

Guardian is the original name for the Tandem NonStop System (TNS) OS, and was renamed (by HP, the current owner of the TNS) to NonStop OS some time ago. It has no connection to HP-UX, but it runs a "Unix like" POSIX environment called Open System Services (OSS).

If you wish to see how it works, feel free to download my PowerPoint GAME slides (Guardian Architecture Made Easy), from www.tinyurl.com/Tandem-GAME (zip archive, read README).

Cheers,

Dear all,
Thank you for your responses.

Henry, I cant access your link. I get:
The requested URL /www.tinyurl.com/Tandem-GAME was not found on this
server. That’s all we know

Gaby,

URLs without "http://" in front will not work directly from Google
Group. That URL should read like this:

http://www.tinyurl.com/Tandem-GAME

Or simply copy the URL to your browser.

Hey Gaby!

It works from here (I just tried the link you passed back in the post), so I suspect that you may have passed some junk character along... Keep trying! If it still fails, try http://www.box.net/shared/bzz23tb2gu !

Cheers,

Henry Norman

Hi Henry,
Do you know if Teamquest software can function on the Guardian NonStop HP systems?
Thanks,
Don

Welcome to NonStop Gaby! It's a special computer that was created in 1974 by some HP engineers who wanted a fault-tolerant system, as opposed to the IBM mainframes which, in those days, would do "down" for days or even weeks at a time.

Guardian is an OS that was created to work with a fault-tolerant system and provide "software fault-tolerance" by using process-pairs. Think of a *nix process running on Linux that has a "backup" process associated with it. So, for example, you run the Apache webserver "httpd" which is now "httpd-P" and "httpd-B". P means primary and B means backup.

You will probably like this system. It has quirks, as all systems do. Enjoy!
