Just downloaded and applied the 'recommended' patch cluster for solaris 2.8
(sparc).
Having huge problems now. After reboot
- can no longer log in from the console.
- can no longer power-down the machine via shutdown -i5
- can no longer log in via xdcmp query.
Fortunately, telnet works, but without console I'm DOA next time network has
to be reconfigured.
Did I install some unexpected security 'feature' that has to be disabled?
Is there a simple setting to re-enable console and xdcmp?

If you look at the logs, you could find out what was installed, and
patchrm the stuff you installed recently. rebooting afterwards
should get you back into normal operation. BTW, would you
mind posting the date of the patch set? ( I don't think I'm going
to install any patches for a while.)

There are a bunch of patches ... and I ran short of disk in /var ... so I
don't think it's practical to remove them.
This was my first time installing patches.
I'm considering re-installing Solaris from the distro CD. Would that
'un-hose' me?

You can do that, but you will lose any and all changes to the system
since it was installed, user IDs, etc. If you can get into it from
a remote terminal, it would be a good idea to run ufsdump on the
whole shebang, then re-install. That way you could selectively
bring back any user files, etc that you need.
