how can more than one machine access the same files (read-only) on a SAN or NAS?

hi
my scenerio
a dozen of sun machines
a disk array

my question
i would like to connect all the servers to the disk array with fibre
channel
could all the servers access the same LUN on the disk array with
only one server can write, the other servers can only read?
what HW/SW i need ?
is it possible for all ther servers to be able to read/write without
messing up the file?

thank you very much

In a stock Solaris installation, no.

If, however you installed the Sun Cluster 3.x software or even the most
recent Veritas Cluster Server (and associated Volume Manager and FileSystem
components) you could do it. I think the VCS clustered filesystem product
only supports 4 concurrent hosts, but is slated to go to 16 hosts later
in the year. Not sure what limitations Sun Cluster has.

However, these arent exactly cheap solutions (especially the Sun Cluster
option). Whereas, NFS is free.

Im not sure whether it is supported by SUN but you can do it..

Step one .. ensure that the storage device is visible from all servers (
ie check your SAN zoning)

Step two .. If the disks are not part of a metadevice, simply mount them
read-only on the RO servers
.. If the disks are part of a metadevice, CAREFULY create
md's on the readonly servers.. and mount them read-only..

I have done this with Disksuite and simple disks, but only
Concatenated filesystems with Disksuite..
