hi,
i have ultra10 box with two IDE ST39120A disks. how do i use
the sol2.8 CDs to repartition these disks?. when i use
format it says "it can not format the disks. I have to use
manufacturer utility".

I believe partitioning is handled by the format command. newfs builds a
filesystem on a partition.

THis is how you do it eg create Solaris partion
You start format then selcet the drive you want to partion.
Then you use fdisk utility to create Solaris partion.
Once you 've done this use partion utility to create slice within Solaris
partion. When all that is done you use newfs to build fs you want BUT you
don't use format.

One way is to search on http://groups.google.com, where you will
find the answer to exactly this question which I posted recently.
Basically, you don't want to format the disk at all - it will be
already formatted by the manufacturer.
