I have a v210 that has a lit-up error light (the golden wrench). The
console says:

SC Alert: PSU @ PS0 has FAULTED.
Nov 30 15:30:57 macphedran rmclomv: PSU @ PS0 has FAULTED.

I replaced the fan with an equilivlant model what do I need do to get
this working
(the fan removed was visibly worn as far as bearings were concered).
So now I still have the error and the message. What do I need to do to
clear this msg

I always thought PSU was a power supply not a fan? A simple google of
the error line might have been easier:

http://forum.sun.com/jive/thread.jspa?messageID=246761

But I did enjoy the comment of the original poster on the thread:

[nobr]Get a replacement power supply.
Give it to someone that can go into the server room.
Remove the current power supply.
Install the new power supply.

....

[/nobr]

yep

I installed, a power supply out of another v210 initially (one where
the rear fan spun up properly) and the PSU error was still there. So
being cheap I thought instead of replacing the power supply I will sub
in a replacement fan. I ordered the replacement Sunon from future
electronics and now both power supplies have fans that spin up
properly. I am hoping there is just a procedure to clear the error.

(fortunatly unlike that guy I can get into the computer room and
replace the PSU)

the one V210 that I borrowed the PSU from does not have an error light
but the one that initially had the error (presumably from the slow
speed on the rear fan in the PSU) still has the error light

Do a /usr/platform/`uname -i`/sbin/prtdiag -v | more to see if all is OK.

These fans are no FRUs. You have to change the entire power supply.

For SunFire V210 exist a FCO (FCO A0266):

The Sun Fire V210 server might experience a warning condition
about Power Supply Unit 0 (PSU0) that Sun has determined is
related to an issue with the PSU's fan. The system can continue
to operate under this condition. Only under elevaated operational
temperatures will the system take action and gracefully shut down,
avoiding system overheating and data loss.

This FCO only affects Sun Fire V210 servers that shipped from Sun after
March 26, 2004 with Power Supply Units as follows:

Sun Part Number: 300-1566-03

Thats true but let me clarify the situation

I have 2 v210s one has the problem with the service light:
-I took the PSU out of the good one put it in the problematic one
-the problematic one with the "WORKING" PSU still has the golden wrench
-I then ordered the fan and put it in the bad PSU which I then put in
the
good v210...all is well with this unit and it has the PSU that I
doctored.
-however the v210 with the golden wrench has an undoctored PSU that
gave no error in its original unit

It has only one possibility. Sorry but your second PSU has also its fan
defective since you change it. If you can, swap the two PSU to be sure.

Both PSU work fine in the one V210
and both give me the golden wrench in the problematic one
is there any way you know of to flip this :

Led State:
--------------------------------------------------
Location Led State Color
--------------------------------------------------
MB ACT on green
MB SERVICE on amber
MB LOCATE off white
PS0 ACT off green
PS0 SERVICE on amber

to
PS0 SERVICE off amber

Perhaps the solaris 10 fault manager keep the error!
what does this command show
#fmadm faulty

Are the maintenance led of the PSU and front panel amber ?

Everytime I had to change a PSU for this problem the maintenance leds goes
down after the swap.
This problem is very curious!

What are the firware versions of both machines for ALOM and OBP?
It's possible the machine having the problem has an old version of ALOM and
a recent version of OBP.
Sometimes this can cause the fault light to be lit even if there is nothing
wrong with the machine.

Try:

% /usr/platform/`uname -i`/sbin/scadm version
