I am in a computer class this summer and one of the projects was to do some
research about a computer related topic. What I did was the Subject of
MUDs and other internet type games that are currently up and being developed
right now. Some of the question I wanted to address and use for some of the
research was, Why do most sysadmins and schools not allow the games to be
used on the systems the schools have up on the net, when it is the students
money that is paying for that computer to be there in the first place.
Some other question is that if you school does not allow this activity to
go one what are things that you do to avoid this and what are some things that
happen to the accounts or students.
And I guess last would be are there any schools that have open policy about
this and allow students to run muds off of there machines, if so were:)
Thanks for your help

It sounds as if you have your mind made up already, but here goes
anyway.
I am a former school sys admin. I know that sys admins don't set
policy. They establish procedures following the policy dictated to
them by the administration.
The fiscal policy of a school is or should be to spend money to
further educational and research goals. If you, your parents, or your
grant organization gave your school their good money for educating
you, and ended up paying for computer games instead, then you ought to
be asking your school some very hard questions about their fiscal
policy.
Another way to look at the question is this. If the school buys
computer "A" for academic purposes, and lots of the resources of the
computer get sucked up by Muds and other games, then the school will
have to buy computer "B" in order to have enough resources for the
original academic projects. Your tuition will be increased to pay for
it. Ask the person paying for your education (yourself, your parents,
your grant organizations) if that's what they want.

You might want to get the computer Academic Use Policy or the student
handbook of several universities. Usually this is spelled out.
Good luck with your research project.
