Tarred up a directory on a Solaris 8 machine and copied it my Solaris
10 machine.

Seems to untar most if not all of the files before giving this error.
What does it mean?

Usually that happens to me when untarring a GNU tar-made tarfile using
Solaris tar. I forget the details, but switching to the other when
extracting is usually sufficient.

I'm betting on your Solaris 8 box, 'which tar' says /usr/local/bin/tar
or something similar, which is probably GNU tar.
