I have a SPARCserver 5 at home, with an external SCSI CD-ROM (ID 6). Having just gone through the installation process on the free binary media kit (install, software 1/2, software 2/2, documentation-europeam) apparently successfully, I'm left with a non-booting system.

The monitor gives me this information:
boot device /iommu/sbus/espdma@5,8400000/esp@5,8800000/sd@3,0:a
Short read. 0x2000 chars read
disk read error
boot: cannot find misc/krtld
boot: error loading interpreter (misc/krtld)
Elf32 read error.
boot failed
enter filename [/platform/SUNW,SPARCstation-5/kernel/unix]:

could anyone suggest a way forward?

Thanks,
Keith

The solaris FAQ says:

5.62) I installed Solaris on a big disk, but now booting fails.

Due to limitations in Openboot PROMs, you can't boot any of the 32bit
SPARCs (sun4c, sun4m, sun4d) from a root partition that has parts lying
beyond the 2GB mark on a SCSI disk.

On systems with really old PROMs (revision 2.5 or less) you need to
make the root partition smaller than 1GB.

The Ultra PROMs are capable of this, but Solaris prior to version 2.6
also has a bug which effectively prevents Ultras from booting from
large root partitions too. Patch 103640-08 or later fixes this
for Solaris 2.5.1, so later 2.5.1 HW releases should be OK too.

Typical error messages include:

bootblk: can't find the boot program
boot: cannot find misc/krtld

Short read. 0x2000 chars read

Read error.

Thanks for the pointer, Casper.
Now that I known what I'm looking for (previous google searches came up with naught), I see that this is a common problem, described in many places. What there doesn't seem to be is a proposed solution anywhere. There must be one (bar fitting a dinky drive and installing onto that) since the SS5 came to me with a minimal Solaris 8 install on it.

Could anyone point me to a solution?

Thanks,
Keith

Casper already gave you one.

Re-install. At the disk partitioning question, make sure that the
root partition is less than 1G. You can have a small "/" partition
and a large "/usr" partition if you want.

Well, there's the rub. I've tried re-installing, and at no time am I asked how big I want the root partition to be. I am asked how big the _swap_ partition should be (and if it should be the lowest numbered slice), but nothing else. In that case I've been accepting the default

Sorry to seem dim, but Solaris is one OS I've never installed before, and this web based installer, while very pretty, isn't very well documented.

So, how do I get the installed to ask me how big I want "/" to be?

Don't use the web based installed: use Software Disk 1 of 2.

The installer asks you about partitions, and whether or not
to allocate them automatically.

Boot from the first software disk, not from the install disk. That
gives you an interactive install. Part of the interactive install is
the disk layout. If you start with the default layout, you are given
a choice to modify. At that point you can change the partition
sizes.

Stay away from web install. Use interactive install.

Aha! That's done the trick. Many thanks to all.
