Hi all; (I'm posting this in this news group as well as the Sun Admin
one)

I'm spec'ing a Sun server for a small (60-70 GB currently, but growing)
but very critical Sybase database server. There'll actually be 2; the
Sybase production DB server and it's backup/failover server. The
current environment is on Ultra 2s running Solaris 2.6; both with 296
MHz processors and 2 GB RAM for the prod box and 1 GB RAM for the
backup/failover. These both have external disk for the Sybase DB, set
up in raw format. The disks are mirrored for redundancy.

So, from the above, it looks like I won't need too much in the way of
server horsepower. What follows is the preliminary specs I've thrown
together. I want to go with servers that aren't already EOL; I got the
following from Sunsolve.

I'd appreciate anyone's input as to my choices, and especially if I've
overlooked anything. We won't be buying direct from Sun, and the
company that we prefer to deal with (well, my BOSS prefers to deal with
anyway) doesn't offer much in the way of 'let's make sure you got
everything you need", or "if you get this, you're gonna want that", or
"you know this won't work with that, right?".

I have a couple of questions myself that I'd appreciate your thoughts
on:

1) I'd like to be redundant wherever possible. I want 2 separate SCSI
cards on two PCI slots. The server I'm looking at is described as
having the following available PCI slots:
One 64 bit 33/66 MHz 3.3V full-length
Two 64 bit 33 MHz 5V full-length

I can't find on the components list a single port SCSI card; they're
all duals. The one I'm looking at is described as "LSI Logic LSI22320-S
PCI/PCI-X (Sun OEM version of LSI22320-R) 3.3/5V 32/64Bit
33/66/100/133MHz" These will work in any of the 3 available slots,
right? Is there any slot should NOT use?

2) Regarding the disk array I've selected (a Sun StorEdge 3320 with no
RAID controller, just JBOD); I'd like to have redundant connections to
the array. From reading the 'Best Practices' guide for this array, I
take it I can connect a single server to it using redundant
connections, and terminate the other two. I can then mirror the disks
across the controllers for my reduncancy; is this correct?

Again; thank you to all who have read thus far. Any and all comments
appreciated.

Why not ask Sun or a reseller? They'll give you a quote on a nice
working system right away...

Yes, but we have no intention of purchasing from Sun; it may sound
silly, but I would feel funny about getting them to do the legwork with
no hope of a sale. Still, you're right; that's what they're there for,
right?

The reseller we'll be dealing with will provide pricing for what I ask
for; I'm afraid that I may be overlooking something.

The reseller must also be able to give you a quote. Anyway, Sun will get
its share from the sale so just hunt them sales guys... ;-)

Dang; I must have clicked reply before typing; I'll get the hang of
this Usenet group yet!

Thanks for your replies, and I'll take your advice. I'm gonna try and
get a Sun contact for a quote. Thanks again.

ps; how DO you reply to a poster without uncluding all of the original
message? I use Google groups to access this Usenet group, and I see
many posts where 'show quoted text' is a link to the original post. How
do I use this feature so the question/answer is not bogged down by
having to sift through the original reply?

Well! It looks like I may have accidentally figured it out. My reply
(above) is in the format I was trying to emulate. SO, thanks again for
the replies.

So ask the reseller for some technical advice. That would be the "Value
Added" part of VAR...

Please DON'T do that, as it makes it hard for non-Googol groups users to
see the thread of conversation. Instead, do as I have done here, which
is trim most of the text you're replying to, leaving enough for context.

Not quite; you're posting the same message several times. And please trim
the unnecessary bits of the post you're replying to.

OK; will try again with this message. Thanks for the tips, and we are
indeed pushing it through a reseller and Sun. As it happens, we got a
cold-call from Sun asking "are you planning any upgrades or purchases
in the near future". Talk about being Johnny-on-the-spot! So I expect
a call back from them imminently.

Thanks again, and I hope this post is in the proper format!

Excellent!

My pleasure, and yes, the format is A OK!
