Hi, I'm trying to hook up a Sun/Sony GDM-20E20 monitor to a SPARCStation
5/170. A GDM-1662B monitor works fine on the box. The GDM-20E20 monitor
power light turns green for about 2-3 seconds - then turns off - but the
[yellow] light to the left of it [power save???] blinks constantly [about 1
blink every second] after the power light turns off. Will the SS5 support
that type of monitor? Any direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Mike

If you reply, could you please reply by email also in case the post doesn't
hit my news server or I don't get to it in time? Thanks!

Well, the GDM-1662B has much more restrictive specs than the GDM-20E20
(67 KHz H, 71.7 Hz V vs 30-82 KHz H, 50-120 Hz V), according to the docs
I found. However, the GDM-20E20 wants sync on green, and the GDM-1662B
uses composite sync. This may well be the problem. I seem to remember
that there are some converters that can handle this sort of discrepancy,
but there's some serious analog signal wizardry involved, so I imagine
that it'd cost you as much as a new monitor to get one. But I could be
wrong.

It's also possible that you can configure the frame buffer to send a
sync on green signal instead of the composite sync, but I've never heard
whether that's possible or not, and without knowing what frame buffer
you have, it's hard to do research.

You can modify the 20E20 to work with your SS5 by adding one resistor to the
20E20. Takes about 15 min. if you can use a soldering iron. Problem is I
can't find the URL to the site that has the instructions(with pictures).
Suggest you do a web search on 20E20. I have done this and it worked.
