Hi,

My news server machine (Sun E450 running Inn 2.4.4 under Solaris 9) has
throttled itself with this bunch of error messages:

Jun 28 16:45:33 yoda innd: [ID 960860 news.error] SERVER cant update_active
sci.physics
Jun 28 16:46:22 yoda innd: [ID 297438 news.crit] SERVER throttle no matching
entry in storage.conf storing article -- throttling
Jun 28 16:46:22 yoda innd: [ID 492761 news.error] SERVER cant store article:
no matching entry in storage.conf

along with a continual logging of:

Jun 28 17:06:00 yoda innxmit[19237]: [ID 459695 news.error] tradspool: could
not mmap article: Invalid argument

which occurs every 30 minutes (due to the way the 'news' crontab entries are
set up I think).

Anyway, I use the traditional storage method for all newsgroups spooled on
the server, so there is no reason why innd should not be able to find a
valid storage method for any news article that is downloaded (I use 'suck'
to pull news articles from an external site) unless there is some strange
condition occuring which prevents innd from being able to handle a
particular aspect of the news article it's trying to store.

This problem has occured before (with previous 2.4.x releases) and I'm not
sure how to resolve it. Most of the time I can try 'ctlinnd renumber
group_name' when logged in as the news user on the server but that doesn't
always seem to fix the problem and the next time innd tries to store an
article for the same newsgroup it tends to trip the same problem. Sometimes
I can run 'makehistory' to rebuild the database files and purge anything
untowards, but again that is not usually successful at resolving the
problem.

I'm running Inn-2.4.4 under Solaris 9 on the server (currently my Sun E450
system). This problem also occurs with annoying regularity on the backup
news server (running currently on a Sun Ultra 2) which is also using
Inn-2.4.4 software to manage a smaller spool of specific groups.

Can anyone suggest a way to figure out what the problem actually is and
perhaps some ideas to resolve it?

Craig.

Strange; innd cannot write to the active file. Is it used by other programs
on your news server?

Also strange. Could you please post your storage.conf file?

Did you try not to use mmap on your news server?
Just put articlemmap: and tradindexedmmap: to false in inn.conf and restart
your news server.

Does the problem also happen on Solaris < 9 and on Solaris 10?
