Hi,
I have an HP C1533A DAT drive connected to a Sparc 20 (Sol2.4).
Unfortunately, I cannot get it to work. In /kernel/drv/st.conf,
I have added:

tape-config-list =
"HP C1533A", "HP DDS2 4mm DAT", "HP-data2",
"HP HP35480A", "HP DDS-DC 4mm DAT", "HP-data1",
"HP HP35470A", "HP DDS 4mm DAT", "HP-data1",
"HP C1553A", "HP DDS2 4mm DATloader", "HP-data2";
HP-data1 = 1,0x34,1024,0x19,3,0x00,0x13,0x03,2;
HP-data2 = 1,0x34,1024,0x239,4,0x0,0x13,0x24,0x3,3;

and rebooted using boot -r.

I have also tried various combinations of the DIP settings on the
drive to no avail - currently they are:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

ON ON OFF OFF ON ON OFF OFF

As it stands, tar and dump give the errors (in /var/adm/messages) coincident
with the orange LED on the drive flashing:

unix: WARNING: /iommu@f,e0000000/sbus@f,e0001000/espdma@f,400000/esp@f,800000/st@5,0 (st5):
unix: Error for command 'write file mark' Err
unix: or Level: Fatal
unix: Requested Block 180, Error Block: 180
unix: Sense Key: Media Error
unix: Vendor 'HP':
unix: ASC = 0x9 (track following error), ASCQ = 0x0, FRU = 0x2

I also hear a lot of relay clicking as the drive tries to read and or write
and looking at the mechanism, these seem to coincide with with the tape
mechanism changing direction.

Now I have seen many messages regarding DAT problems in the FAQs, and in
this newsgroup, but I have found no definitive answer to this problem?
Is it a software/config. problem, and if so what is the answer, or is it a
hosed DAT drive?

Any/all suggestions welcomed!

Thanks in advance,

Chris Gatenby

My working entries are:

tape-config-list=
"HP C1533A", "HPC1533a", "hpc1533a";
hpc1533a =1,0x34,1024,0x1239,1,0x00,1;

Dip-switches

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

ON ON OFF ON ON OFF OFF OFF

The problem with relay clicking is probably a missing file mark or eom.
Try just writing any file at the beginning of the tape.

Nevertheless one of our two tape drives showed up the "track following"
error after two years of operation. It is now under repair.
