How can I bypass the protection in Elite? I've made a cd with a bunch of
games on for a real speccy and Elite is one of them. It loads up fine, but
then a screen comes up asking me for a code and displaying some weird
looking symbols. Anyone know how I can get around it? I've had great fun
playing a whole load of speccy classics over the last week or so, it'd be a
shame if I couldn't add Elite to the list.

Did all speccy Elite have lenslok? Mine certainly didn't, purchased sometime
early in 1986.

The original release version for the 48K machine (identifiable by its
redefined font) certainly did. That was in 1985.

A later version was coded without the defined font. This may or may not
have been meant for the 128K Spectrum only (more missions?) but a copy
compatible with both machines was re-released as part of the Supreme
Challenge compilation around 1986/1987. That version definitely had no
protection.

There's a poke you can do (49837,0) after loading, but you'd need a
Multiface or similar to do that.

Maybe an old type-in cheat program could be adapted?

Standard 48K version, and came with all the lenslock gubbins, just didn't
ask for it :-)

Mine did and to my eternal annoyance, I did find a poke that I could do in
Multiface which meant you could just input anything and it was OK. Trouble
is, I cannot remember what it was!

There was also a trick where you could start as Elite, as I recall.

When the game starts and asks "Load New Commander" you answer yes but
actually save (without a tape running obviously.) When you start the
game you have lots of credits and strange weapons.

There was also the trick of exiting a station, flipping over and starting
the hyperspace countdown then docking with the station before the
countdown completes. This would place you as docked with the station at
you hyperspace jump target thus missing out all that tedious space stuff.
Ideal for getting into tough Anarchy systems and selling those narcotics!

Perfect when you were starting off too until you could afford
a docking computer.
