Lerm had a software way, but it was far from automatic as I recall.
The main annoyance with the real plus three was the naff tape handling
qualities due to poor design.

tap2dsk will convert a tape image to a disk image, then you just need
one of the tools that lets you write it to a real disk. Hopefully
you're using 3.5" these days, but there are ways of hooking a 3" drive
up to a PC.

ah, missed that bit. Aside from the aforementioned Lerm software,
probably not. The Multiface 3 isn't that expensive though.

Using a real +3 and no additional hardware (except a tape player) it
certainly is possible for a lot of games, as I did it back in the
day. If I remember certain games that had some kind of copy
protection didn't work well or at all infact. And i even recall
writing short menus in basic to choose the games from the +3 auto disk
loader....

I can't remember the exact process but it was something along the
lines of maybe poking some values and then loading the first section
of the tape (into memory) then saving to disk. Loading the next
section, saving to disk etc. Maybe it was a command to load the data
from the tape into a pecific memory location, and then write that
memory back to disk or something...

Speedloaders and the like didn't work at all. I forget whether
headerless data blocks could be transferred, my brain says no, but my
distant memory tells me it may have been possible.

I did this too, often spicing them up with a routine from Program
Pitstop in YS. One menu "exploded" the menu entry that was selected.
Often I'd just use a loading screen from one of the games on the disk
and overprint the menu entries.

Yep, something like that. There were programs available (but
irritatingly I can't remember the name of the diskful of programs I
used to use - IIRC there was only one program on the disk which was
of any use) which allowed you to load tape blocks into memory, and
then save them to disk. I transferred quite a few games this way,
before we got a Multiface. Even after, I preferred this method as
being better than creating a snapshot with the Multiface.
