comprehensive list togehter with some classification
or so (coulb maybe become a part of the FAQ).
BTW, I gave my Spedtrum a friend in Czechia 2 years ago
for education purposes and subsequently also gave / deleted my
program collection. Does anyone have "The Hobbit" as snapshot
and is willing to send it to me (I did finish the game but
never got 100 % -- was this possible at all?
Since I am a great fan of JRR Tolkien and have by
now read most of his books, does anyone have a copy
of "The Lord of the Rings" - as far as I remember this was an
adventure in 3 parts, but I never got hold of a copy (neither bought
nor borrowed). "Bored of the Rings" should be similar? Is anyone willing to
send me snapshots of these?

Not by chance, no. Here's the list of what I have. I would make it
all available via anonymous FTP, but can't, for boring, trivial,
nobody-cares-anyway reasons. No classification here, that's because
I don't have any way to play these games, I just collect and store in
case I can get permission to distribute them.
If you live in Manchester, UK, you could try to talk the people at
Ocean or US Gold into allowing free distribution. I'm supposed to
have a list of copyright holders for most of these programs, but I
seem to have lost it. None of them even answered my letters, anyway.
FYI: I'm the person on the net with the most snaps, I guess, and I
don't even have a machine I can run an emulator on :-)

Only two probs:
1) US Gold is based in Birmingham, not Manchester.
2) Ocean might not allow a lot of their software out as they're licenses,
and they have to pay royalties to the companies concerned when they sell the
software. It'd be a case of getting permission from everyone - such as film
companies for games like Robocop (etc etc).
Also, if the games *do* get put into the public domain, then I have an
extensive back-catalogue of 128k spectrum games that have been converted to
run without multiload and with proper music on the SAM Coupe.

Yep, the two years of Your Spectrum were definitely the golden ones.
After that it all went down hill. Hard to imagine, but the first issue
of Your Spectrum had only *4* pages of games reviews. The rest was all
assembly language and hardware hacking etc.
I stopped buying Your Sinclair around 1987, so I'm afraid I never came
accross young Mr Cooke. In my day it was that guy Max whatsisname with the
long hair who did the tecky stuff and the QL stuff. Still, I don't
think he was as clued up as Rupert Goodwins who did the tecky stuff
for Sinclair User at the time. Wonder if Rupert's lurking here....?

I thought we did a good job with (a) Resources available and (b) especially
in comparison to Sinclair User.
Crash, it must be said was brilliant. But we weren't Crash. And they died.
Near the end though, we did become more crash like - techy features and
all...
And you still reckon we showed the way forward for the end of the Speccy, so
to speak? Please explain.
Well, perhaps you've put a slightly stronger interpretation on this than I
intended, but there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that Your Sinclair
an inferior product to Your Spectrum (the magazine which it replaced, for
those of you too young to remember ....) I still have every copy of Your
Spectrum (except Issue 1, sadly) and there's nothing better than digging
them out every now and again and having a good read through them ... it was
far more technically-based, with all sorts of lovely articles and programs -
who could forget reading about how to interface your Spectrum to a Casio-tone
keyboard, or typing in the first sound sampler program I ever came across
(and it was only about 70 bytes long), or having the mathematics of 3D
graphics explained to you, or getting proportional fonts onto your screen
(I used that routine in every Spectrum program I wrote after that). Yes,
there were games too - but what other magazine regularly took the best game
of the month and told you how the programmer had written it? How David Webb
cleared the screen ridiculously quickly in Starion? How the maps were stored
in Sabre Wulf? Why the screen stayed blank in Fairlight until the whole
room was drawn?
Those were the days when those of us with computers were inspired to think
for ourselves, not just sit and play games for hours (although we did that
too, occasionally - but we were just as likely to be playing something
we'd written ourselves).
And then came ... Your Sinclair. Almost immediately, we lost all the
projects, all the technical insights, and what we were left with was a
magazine full of games reviews and people writing 'fnar' and 'oo-er' all the
time in what was presumably an attempt to fill up space. We did get a couple
of pages known as 'Program Pitstop', which invariably printed everyone's
programs wrongly anyway (or at least, they did with the two I got printed).
And of course, then came the cover-mounts - which sadly we all still have to
put up with today. Even Amiga Shopper's started now, and we all know what
happened to the last decent Future publication when they started that caper...
Anyway, Your Spectrum had a unique place in the marketplace at the time, and,
as you said, you could never have hoped to take on Crash. So by switching
to Your Sinclair, in my view, we got the worst of both worlds - there were
no more 'enthusiasts' magazines available, and for games we were still going
to buy Crash anyway, because it was much better. (That's the royal 'we', of
course!) Perhaps the ultimate test is how many back copies of Your Sinclair
I've got - one, and only because it's got some of my computer art in it.
BTW, Sinclair User made much the same mistake; it was never the same when
they turned it into a comic by introducing that stupid teddy bear and
stopped the 'Vicar uses ZX81 for writing sermons'-type articles.
There. That's got that of my chest.
Anybody want to sell me Your Spectrum issue 1? (I knew I should have bought
it when they still had it in the back issues department...)
I agree with every word - beautifully eloquently put. It was my childhood
ambition to be User of the Month.

Sorry, YS iss 1, or my issue 1 ZX Spectrum complete with 32K extra ram board

Does anyone think there is a chance that the Speccie might ever be manufactured
new again? I feel sure, given a few more years of boring expensive uncopiable
cartridge games that the market would love the innovation of a cheap elegant
micro with a nice soft rubber keyboard.
If we're going to start programming for it again though, (read if I am...) then
having grown up and so on... has anyone configured gcc to cross compile
for it? :-) :-)
That would be something of a dream for me, I got sort of bored of reloading
time and time again!

Well yeah, sorry, I obviously just sit and play games all day. Ain't that

I expect you're referring to NCE. The Disk on NCE was an attempt to boost
sales, not a `mistake'. It was either that or quit the magazine, it just
wasn't selling enough.
Unfortunately, I reckon the disk lost more customers than it gained, but
such is life. I've got every issue from 15... (i think), and they fill a
sizeable amount of a wardrobe, let me tell you...

Sorry - did I mention the word 'mistake' anywhere ?! You're quite right,
of course, it was a last ditch attempt to save it. Now, if they could
have stuck on the disk without doubling the price, it might just have
worked ....

Ah yes - I used to have that on subscription. Then it went downhill too,
when they started printing it in colour ... I can still remember a few of
the programs that were in the first issue I bought: Biorythms, a graphical
demonstration of the Binomial Distribution, a program which drew a cube
on the screen (really!) and a rather good horse racing game which I later
converted for the Spectrum (these were all ZX81 programs, y'see).
But what about it's sister publication, Sinclair Projects - that must have
been the ultimate in enthusiast's magazines ...
Anyway, back to the present, and to this Mac Quadra 840AV which isn't
really over-stretched as a terminal emulator. So I'd better start doing
something impressive on it to justify the #4500 the boss spent.

Well the techy stuff came too late. Your Sinclair never took it's readers
seriously. There was too much puerile rubbish. ZAT has never talked down to
its readers. This is one reason why it's still going today
However, the Your Sinclair editor was never an irritating tosser (sorry Dave!)
In fact I've had stuff written by me printed in practically every issue from
1989-1993

Well I made a mistake in one of the programs I had printed because I hadn't
done the range checking quite right and it wasn't noticed after testing; in
fact I didn't know about it until Craig told me. Needless to say I was
slightly embarassed
Actually it's more like the art editor's fault, cause he didn't understand
Speccy programs that well he just clipped the source file straight into the
Mac, which occasionally resulted in bits being left off or printed on the
wrong lines.....

for a YS for emulators? They could sort out non-copyright cover disks (or
will this give rise to getting charged for all the speccy games again,
at 20 quid a throw?)

No, Your Sinclair ceased to be last October (issue 93?) although I stopped
reading it around issue 88 or so. However if we can pull Jonathan Nash onto
the internet, who's to say that an electronic version will surface?

Ok lets get pragmatic... It seems that everyone is trying to
contact the copyright holders and they do not give a dam about what we
are trying to do ( A very nice freely accessible repository of speccy
game classics ).
I wonder if they know or care anything about the existence of
this Newsgroup and even less about the possible existence of an ftp
site with these snapshots.
I doubt that any problem would arise if someone made a huge
list of snapshots available via ftp on his home machine. It is only a
question of being the first !!!

I managed to get a reply from US Gold... I wrote to them last year asking
permission to distribute the games via FTP, but they said no. Thank you
for asking, but no. And to reassure me, they added that all their master
copies were in flame-proof vaults, so there was no danger that the games
would go out of existence. It was all rather depressing...
Still, on the bright side of things: you may remember Hewson Consultants,
publishers of such games as Quazatron, Ranarama, Uridium and so on (many
classics!). Well, although they went bust in 1992, they have been resurrected
as 21st Century Entertainment, publishers of games such as the fantastic
Pinball Dreams / Fantasies. Andrew Hewson himself is the head of the new
company, and with a bit of digging about I've found that all the Hewson
copyrights are held by him. He's based only a few miles from here, so I'm
going to try to see him personally. I'll ask him whether the programs can
be distributed, either as public domain or as shareware. What sort of price
would you think would be justified? A couple of pounds?

I've got a few SU cover tapes somewhere. I think they contain only
mediocre games though. They are from the days when that silly bear
started to appear all over SU. Like another magazine mentioned in this
group, SU got more game reviews and less tech info by the years. I stopped
reading SU shortly after the bear arrived.

Anyway, Sinclair User started the tape wars in 1988 in response to
Your Sinclair's cover tapes. Unfortunately most of their games
were crap and they all featured Kamikaze bear in one way or
another.....

Not all of them were crap, in later years they did manage to put some
good stuff out on their 'six packs', 'Great 8'..... etc etc. I remember
getting games like 'Flying Shark', 'Heartland', 'Solomons Key' and many
others that way.
