Heya!

After a VERY hectic year (basically a rollercaoster ride involving company
politics and my quest to do something actually useful for them), I've now got
a lot of vacation time to use up, so I'm going to the USA for a week.

This won't be a normal vacation - I specifically want this to be pure
commercialism, being a bit of a shopaholic, and with the Christmas season upon
us, what better time to go that the last full week before Christmas itself?

What would you call THE shopping capital of the States? I want to go where the
biggest stores are, the largest malls, the widest variation of shops - just
basically drown in pure undiluted commerce. Any ideas?

I was told (though I've not been there) that Minneapolis is the shopping
capital of the U.S.A.

Er..........

Hmm, went to NY in 99 and it was OK - but only really saw the insides of
clothes shops (with a young lady and YES the stereotype is true in this
instance). Certainly Bloomingdales was gigantic, although most of it is
fairly superfluous.

Erm, is that any help?

NY is certainly a goer - hotel+flight for a week before xmas at 550-600 quid.
Incredibly tempting.

Left Gatwick 2pm on the Friday and left JFK midnight on the Sunday - £200 to
you squire, although it was in March. Still managed to `do` £600 which was a
bit scary.

Still paying it off! It's true what they say about `Noo Yawhkers` being rude
though. Or maybe it was just me....

New York City, natch. I regard that as America's capital anyway! :D

Times Square and the streets around there are like Piccadilly
Circus/Oxford Street on a major scale. There's some electrical shops
there, and they sell video equipment for PAL as well as NTSC, so you
can bring back something that'll work. (Not sure about the PS2's tho)

14th Street has lots of cheap bargain stuff, and there's odd gifts to
be bought in Greenwich Village.

NYC it is, then - just got a VERY cheap flight from Thomas Cook. Heathrow to
NY JFK 200quid all-in. Can't be bad...

You're lucky! My flight cost £313. Same airports, but went via
Iceland!

You'll need $30 plus tip for the JFK-to-Manhattan taxi, and there's
cheap hotels there like:
www.murrayhillinn.com
www.amsterdaminn.com

$17 gets you a week-long Metrocard (to us Brits, that's like a
week-long London Underground Travelcard), or $4 for a day one.

There's a good internet cafe on East 32nd Street in the 'Japanese'
area, just a stones throw away from the Empire State Building.

Don't bother buying CDs from HMV and the like, they may be cheaper
than British HMVs, but they're still not as cheap as American
websites!

Lots of cheap tacky NY souvenirs are available from shops near Empire
State Building, including the classic "I <heart> NY" t-shirt!

Most of NYC isn't violent like you expect it to be from all those
films. Harlem's okay, as long as you avoid east Harlem.

If you're a fan of chocolate, just don't buy it in the US. Their
chocolate tastes awful to us Brits. Try a Hershey's bar if you don't
believe me!

And this URL is very useful indeedy...

How nice for you, but this is very hard to see.. why post it here off topic
or not, seems a strange choice.
