Has anyone noticed that for certain searches, the YouTube results are
suspiciously close to the top? Is this another Microsoft in the
making? (I personally think all the companies are the *same*, but read
my P.S. below).
Btw, I'm fucking *posting* this using Google because I don't know of
another way to post to Usenet, so they've probably already tracked my
IP ;)
BitNaughty.
P.S. But I have to say, if I was Google (that much talent in the same
place at the same time), I'd want world domination too!
Hi!
Ive considered this recently. We also have GoogleDNS (which Im
currently using) on 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
I think we should judge the company on its behavior. Look at Comes V
Microsoft and you can judge how MS behaved as "top dog", thats one
example of many.
I would be happy with Google being a net superpower as long as their
actions are not brought into question with dubious practices.
Time will tell, but until then I am happy with the Google services I use.
Kind regards.

Yeah, but the only place to hide a donkey is behind the sofa.

But since BT email is handled by Yahoo it seems to me that these companies

This bnews server is in house at Virgin, but the binary servers alread are
contracted out to highwinds in the Netherlands...
sigh.

Since you apparently have permission to install things (like toolbars), you
could install a browser other than IE or Firefox (such as Opera) and only
use that. IE and Firefox are the only two with Yahoo Toolbar versions
available thus far.
Eq.
Yes, indeed. I've been using Opera (very fast) and even Lynx quite a bit
recently. I love the way Lynx bypasses all the graphical clutter, and
gets straight to the information. That is on sites it still works on,
which seem to be getting fewer in number nowadays. I still have to use
IE7 connecting to some of our systems which apparently use IE-specifc
activeX controls etc..
Anyway, this thread has given me an opportunity to see if I finally got
my text-formatting right in the 'tin' newsreader, which I have just
returned to after brief flirtations with each of Thunderbird, Seamonkey,
Microsoft Outlook and Google Groups last year. Must say it took me a
while to get back into using this software after not using it for about
fifteen years or so. For me it rekindles some old memories, although I
don't think I'll be going back to the 'ed' editor at the minute as 'vi'
will suffice. I still think it's worthwhile using A newsreader though.
For example, google groups doesn't even carry alt.os.linux.ubuntu - so
they haven't achieved total domination just yet!

Erm, nowhere...
Links is better. It's graphical if you want it by using the -g switch, or
text, with table rendering capability (which lynx can't manage).

Jolly good show, old bean. I've been a tin user since I first found usenet
in 1995.

I could only second on that.
... I wonder, could there be a version of Lynx for Spectrum one
day?

My experience with netnews began with Pine, I think, almost a
decade ago. Then, I've tried Netscape communicator and SLRN,
but after taking the opportunity to learn Emacs, I've finally
stopped on Gnus (c. 2002, I believe), which I've used ever
since.

Funny enough, but some 15 years ago I was mostly using Spectrum.

Do you use Vim (i. e., Vi iMproved), or some other Vi clone?
Working in another city for a few days (just returned back
yesterday), I've used a plenty of Vim. But I like ed for sure
when I need to edit a line or two.
(Emacs is just too heavy to start it for a few days; but I like
to have it silently running under Screen for months, or as long
as an UPS will allow.)

Various youtube videos show what appear to be a TCP/IP stack running on
a ZX spectrum, so it seems to me that it's possible to write some form
of simple web client for it. (if someone hasn't already - admittedly
I've been away from the speccy scene for a few months and out of touch
with latest developments).

At the time I was a student and did not have a real speccy with me. Thus
begun my love of emulation, at the time I was using Chritian Gandler's
excellent ZX Spectrum emulator for the Atarti ST. I remember sourcing a
lot of speccy software from ftp.ijs.si in Slovenia.

Yes, I'm using ViM right now. I don't mind using emacs either although I
only have the most basic knowledge of it. In 1991, I was given a speed
course on vi and although I've forgotten many of the more obscure
command sequences, I guess it stuck with me ever since.

Yes, it's a good piece of software. Now I've got my "tin hat" on, I'm
feeling safe from the tentacles of Google. Do they still preach "Don't
be evil" I wonder?

'Suspcious' is a bit of a stretch. What they've done for some time is
just to put a few of the most relevant results from each of their
different media search engines (video, images, news) near the top,
before showing the rest of the (web-only) search results below.
However, they hold enough information about us all to be very bad
whenever they like.

Yeah, what bothers me is that it's *their* media search engines that
are near the top - there are other sites besides YouTube doing videos,
like Vimeo for example.
