Hi There All

I've recently obtained a snap of the 128k version of Elite. It _appears_ to be
just the same as the 48k one.

Are there any differences ?

Any replies would be much appreciated, as this is rather bugging me.

The 48K version crashed spectacularly on the 128K. It was rewritten for
compatibility with both 48/128K. When it was rewritten, a few bugs were
removed and the load/save routines altered.

Not much. AFAIK the S in the bottom right of the scanner display is a
different shape, and the stations launch Vipers when you shoot at
them.

You'd have thought they could have put in more ships, and have it
play the Blue Danube when you're docking or something...

PS - In the 128K version. Once you get a decent ship, try positioning
it on the opposite side of the space station to the docking bay, and
shoot the station. See how many Vipers you can pick off before they
overrun you, and Hyperspace when you're shield is about to run out.
Surely the quickest way to get the kills you need to become Elite.

PPS - Has anyone ever managed to hit anything (other than an
asteroid, space station or debris) with a side laser?

I was always under the impression that the 128 version had more
"missions" if you can call them that and that the fuelscoop bug was
taken out. I'm not sure though.

They released a 128k-compatible version, which is almost identical to the
48k version but doesn't crash, and also a full expanded 128 version.

Oddly enough, nothing really. They just removed a few bugs and called it

128K for some reason. People eh?

I found that a snapshot of the 48K version of Elite runs quite happily
on a 128K machine - maybe there was just something in the initial lenslok
code that wasn't compatible with the 128.

[Full info: This is a copy of 48K Elite snapshotted with a Multiface One
on the title (spinning ship) screen, reloaded on an original Sinclair 128K
Spectrum - works fine.]

I think that the 128K version is Ver similar, apart from it runs on
a 128K Spectrum, whereas the 48K (Lenslock) version didn't.
Also it has police spaceships, I cannot remember their names, which
chase you if your a criminal. To try this out blast a spacstation on the
48K version, not much happens, try this on the 128K version and police
start chasing you.

I think that the 128K Elite actually runs on a 48K speccy and was
just a 128K compatable rerealse of the original with no lenslock and
the extra feature mentioned above.

Me! Of course it was much easier on the lovely, smooth BBC original version
of the game, but it was possible on the speccy verion too. On one memorable
occasion I even finished off a Krait (I think) in this fashion. I initially
got the idea from lining up with a Cobra or whatever that has arrived in
range (as I was space skipping to the planet with the "J" key) and the
switching to the side view to watch it glide gracefully past. I'm sure most
of us have done that, and well, it's only really a small step from there to
callously shooting the poor trader ship as it goes by! :-> Side shots in
combat were more tricky, but possible if you were bored...

There was one change that was noticable, if you attacked a space station in
the 48k version, no vipers came out (well, on my 3.5" opus version
anyway!:)) On the 128k version, if you attacked a space station, a swarm of
vipers were released to protect it (not that it needs protection!).
There were also a few bug fixes which I can't remember (something to do
with the trading screen or something).

Of course I could be completely wrong! (I had the version released on 3.5"
Opus discovery disk!)
