Hi,
IMHO the eZ80 is not usable for a new Spectrum because of the used
I/O-ports.
But maybe I'm mistaken.
A Z280 should be more compatible and it will maybe run at 16 oder 20 MHz.
It is also possible to exchange the Z80 in a original Spectrum with a Z180
(a "clone" of the never sold Z800) or HD64180 if you use a clock-double-
circuit (it needs 7MHz clock for 3.5MHz speed).
Many years ago a german engineer (I think his name was "Manfred
Schmitt") did this and he reported that his Spectrum works a little bit
faster (up to 15%) because the '180 does some commands faster than the
original Z80.
Nevertheless the eZ80 would be a fine processor for a great new
"Spectrum". Remember: The SAM is not "fully compatbile" and is also a "new
Spectrum" too.
Maybe one should make it with some incompatibilities at some level.
greets,
Frank

Perhaps you should check out the AZX Monstrum. It's based on Zilog Z380 (a
32-bit version of the good old Z80, capable of running at 40 MHz). The
computer has it's own graphic adapter, AT-keyboard, own BIOS and
extended BASIC-ROM, and RAM memory expandable up to 4GB linear! The
computer is supposed to be compatible to 98%. Standard devices of are
HDD-controller, DMA vs IRQ controller, ROM-Task Switching and more. So far
only the HDD-controller is produced but the rest exists as drawings. All
the plans are freely available. There is a site about is at
http://azx.germany.ms/ and another one at http://www.azx.8m.com/

Sounds great... anyone able to translate it?

Er... it's more difficult to get a Z380.
The availability of the Z280 is better, but the Z280 has only a 16-Bit-Bus
and runs with approx. max. 20MHz. Does the AZX run with a Z280?

The Z280 was discontinued about a year ago when Hayes
stopped buying them. The replacement is supposed to
be the Z380. I happen to like the Z380 and I like it
more than the eZ80.

Z380 I was told.

I've been told that they plan to make a translation, but I guess there are
more russians interested in it. But why not write to them and ask for a
translation?

Roman Petrov told me, that he will translate some of the NeOS docs to
english language. If he's gonna do that he can translate some more docs.
