The DISCiPLE disk-interface needs Shugart 400-type diskdrives. Are the
diskdrives P.C's use nowadays of this type? In other words, can I use my
pc-diskdrive for the spectrum as well?

Umm, AFAIK this isn't the case, to do this I think you'll need to make a
bit of cable to swap around the appropriate connections, but alas, I
can't remeber which ones you'll need to do..

Use drives from Atari ST's or Acorns as they are of the correct type (Im
in the process of fitting a couple of them into my recently ressurected
Opus Discovery 1)

In short, yes. Bear in mind that you won't be able to use high density disks
and if you use more than one drive you'll need a normal cable (without the
twist) and configure the second drive as drive 1 (the first is drive 0 at
hardware level). If it's a 3.5" then the drive will by 80 tracks/2 sides, if
it's a 5.25" then it'll be 40 tracks (if it's a standard PC drive) and
probably 2 sides.

I'm not sure about this. I bought a Plus-D disk interface from MGT, the
same people who made the Disciple and Sam Coupe. The Drive which was
supplied with it was described as a Shugart 400 type. It seems, however,
to be a standard 720K 3.5 inch disk drive. I subsequently used it on my
QL with a 780K Trump card with no trouble. A program written for the QL
called Xover allowed me to convert QDOS files to MSDOS files and Format
DOS disks in this drive. All this train of Logic leads me to believe
that the disk drive supplied with my Plus-D is just the same as a
Standard PC 720K drive. This however does not preclude the possibility
that the pinouts for the sinclair interfaces and the PC IDE are different
but I do know that the connectors are exactly the same.
I have not tried this old drive with my PC since I already have a 1.44M
3.5 inch drive. If anyone does know any different from me please write.

Fully Functional...

Clive.
