Foolish old me, on seeing chunks of my web site republished on the CLEAR
site (some of the author's permissions to distribute their games from my
"Free games" page), emailed CLEAR to ask them to link to my page rather
than copy it without even crediting it.
While 'Bongo' then credits my site by name (but not as a link), he won't
link to the page with the original permissions on them... a few
deliberately argumentative and obtuse emails later, with much use of the
royal 'we' and I finally twig what is going on. Must be getting slow in
my old age. Look at the headers from the last mail from 'Bongo' (my own
address slightly mangled by me here):

So from that we see Bongo is really a Pipex user, using the same version
of Outlook Express as Stuart, and Outlook Express signed onto the SMTP
server as 'stu'. The message ID also includes 'stu'. Not conclusive
proof I know, but it's good enough for me.
Bongo's initial postings show the same headers, i.e. identical to
Campbell's later posts.
Let me guess Stu - someone else is trying to pretend to be you, right?
Even in email? Getting to be a habit, this.
So this journo starts his little CLEAR organisation, but is speaking to

He credited you. You said that youself. Whilst he could have done more, you
CANNOT claim he doesn't credit his sources. And, as he's obviously in some
sort of fued with you, why should he do more than the absolute minimum?

Most people with a cause contact a journalist to help promote that cause.
What's wrong with a journo promoting his own cause?
All this is irrelevant anyway. Does all this suddenly mean that CLEAR isn't a
cause worth backing? Does all this suddenly mean that the IDSA won't do
anything (despite the fact that they've already closed down a popular site)?
For fucks sake, stop the points scoring and smell the coffee. The emulation
scene is under threat of being severely restricted to only PD stuff. What good
is it trying to turn it into your own personal crusade against someone who may
or may not be involved with CLEAR?

Well, that bit rings true, at least.
One question - if I "was" CLEAR, why would I be keeping it secret? It isn't
anything illegal, in fact as far as I can see it's quite a noble, sensible,
grown-up and respectable thing to be doing. Frankly, if it was me, I'd want
the credit. Certainly, it would seem an AWFUL lot of trouble to go to to
justify a magazine article that justifies itself perfectly well anyway,
since piracy of all forms and increased attempts to stamp it out is the
hottest topic in the trade press right now.
Still, as long as you're happy. I think, for the sake of sanity, it may be
time for my second-ever killfile in four years.
>Does it matter?
You think it doesn't???!!!

AFTER I COMPLAINED TO THE IDIOT. In all this copyright wrangle, the man
doesn't even bother to credit the source of much of his material?
Beautiful.

I'm one of these foolish types who like journalists to report, not make,
the news.

When it's run by someone incapable of reasoned argument, common decency
or basic politeness - yes, I think it means CLEAR is something to steer
the hell clear of (no pun intended). By all means contact IDSA and
explain why you think they're wrong, but don't do it via CLEAR's stupid
spam mail idea.
No doubt IDSA have had a few identical mails already, and are getting
mightily pissed off with it. That's really the way forward isn't it -
piss them off, don't reason with them, just piss them off. Yeah, that'll
work. Duh.

Closed down? Closed down? Dave has removed the ROMs and AFAIK is
currently working out which ones to PUT BACK, while the rest of his
sites goes from strength to strength.

I merely like to have the full facts in front of me, and share them with
others. You'd rather I said nothing and let this deception continue? How
odd.

So you think that showing that the emulation scene is divided is better than
showing a united front? Interesting way of protesting...

This petition process is an accepted form of protest. Companies just ignore
long signature lists - to get their attention you have to get people to send
in individual letters, and the organisers usually provide a template.

Bad choice of words on my part. In my mind, a ROM site without ROMs may just
as well be closed down. And the only word from the people behind Daves
Classics I've seen is that ROMs _might_ come back. I guess if they do, the
copyright holders of the ROMs would have either given their permission for the
ROMs to be on the site, or the copyright holders aren't a part of the IDSA.
For Daves Classics, that probably means that 90% of the ROMs will be put back
up on the site. If the whole situation is repeated with World of Spectrum,
only about 5% of the snapshots will remain on the site due to more Speccy
games publishers (and subsequent owners) are now part of the IDSA.

Yes, any deception on the part of Stuart OBVIOUSLY means that CLEAR shouldn't
be backed and its cause is invalid...
Jeez... here's emulation under threat, and you'd rather take the advantage in
using all this to fire another salvo at Stuart. It really does sadden me...
Of course, if you can PROVE that Stuart is behind Rocketship (not enough proof
just to suit you), then the ball game changes completely. If Stuart WAS
Rocketship, then he could use the IDSA issue to do some scaremongering and
increase sales of Rocketship's CD. So, Damien, rather than firing blanks all
the time, perhaps you could solve the nub of your feud with Stuart right here
and now. And in this newsgroup.

You make an interesting point here, Nick. Because currently, Damien is
suggesting that I'm simultaneously Rocketship, CLEAR and myself. Which means
he thinks I'm:
1. Making rich profits from selling emulator CDs. (As Rocketship)
2. Going to a great deal of trouble (as CLEAR) to prevent emulator sites
being closed down (such closures would, of course, be GREAT news for makers
of emulator CDs), hence *destroying* those potentially-much-increased
profits.
3. Loudly publicising both facts (as Stuart) in order to write about it.
All at the same time. You can see why a casual observer might be a bit
confused.
Mostly his idiocy just entertains me, but his absurdly pig-headed and
vindictive posting of flat-out lies like this could rebound on everyone, if
it achieves its desired effect and scuppers the campaign.

I've dealt with some rather elaborate conspiracy theories in my time, and
Damien's, on face value, is one of the most tenuous. Of course, IF he can
prove a link between you and Rocketship (other than the fact that both of you
use Pipex...) then he might have something.

Hello everyone!
In fact, the statements above are not true. Here is a extract from the last
email I sent to Damien yesterday.
>If you still specifically want us to change your credit to a link
>credit, that's fine - I explained you why we didn't do it that way in the
>first place.
As you see, I DID offer to link to his page. Previously I hadn't, as after
we received many emails saying that we were just making it easy for IDSA to
find emulation sites, I'd removed ALL direct links to other people's sites.
I had told Damien this.
Damien had sent a number of angry emails to me DEMANDING that all the
permisions which had originally been on his site be removed and replaced
with links to his page. Out of hundreds of emails since CLEAR started, this
is the only time anyone has tried to use it to increase his own website
traffic. He claims that:
>>I want the
>>information on permissions in one place where it can be used as a
>>reference - not scattered in edited form over different sites.
Yet, we have many more permissions than him (not being restricted to
Spectrum games), so surely it makes sense for such things to be collected on
a site specifically concerned with emulation and copyright? Damien did not
want us to have these things AT ALL, he wanted them to be ONLY on his site.
Since the permisions are obviously meant for public information by the
authors, I was confused as to why he would want to restrict them to only one
page, if not for his own benefit. I was always polite, and said "sorry for
any offence", and put up credits (which no-one else had asked for, although
they knew we had copied permissions from their pages) and offered to put up
a link, but he was too angry to reason with. (My emails are now refused by
his mail program.)
This newsgroup has some strange people.
Bongo.

He would indeed... the secret of completely subverting and reversing
reality.
The boy is so crazed with blind hatred, I fully expect to be accused of the
murders of JFK, Princess Diana and the Archduke Ferdinand any time now, on
the grounds that Lee Harvey Oswald once ate a haggis or something. Still, I
suppose it keeps him off the streets.
:>Or should I say CLEAR *is* Stuart Campbell.
: Does it matter?
Well, seeing as the whole thing is a copyright issue, it seems a bit...
Hypocritical to blindly copy Damiens page rather than link to it, without
even crediting him. Also, if damien were to gain more permissions to put on
his page, this way, it would not be mirrored on the CLEAR page, whic
defeates the object, as far as I'm concerned.

Sigh. Except, Damien, one of the *very first* things I said publically in
this thread was that I'd donated some webspace to the campaign (since the
current space isn't big enough to hold anything but the hastily-built
temporary pages). One of the perks of my job is being able to register
domains for free, which I did as a favour when asked.
Still, I really AM flattered at being such an important feature in your life
that you go to all this trouble. Do you have lots of big photocopied
pictures of me on your bedroom wall, too?
Killfiles are the equivalent of a nine-year-old schoolboy sticking his
fingers in his ears and going "NA NA NA NA NA I CAN'T HEAR YOU NA NA NA
NA!", which is why I try never to resort to them. But you win.
To everyone else: sorry about all this. Sometimes I just can't leave a moron

And as I said, 'Bongo/CLEAR' is YOU. And you denied it. And 'Bongo' (who
laughably claimed to be from Sweden in a mail to me) has 'his' mail
directed straight to you. Can't even admit it when caught, what a loser
you really are.

25Mb isn't big enough to hold anything but a few K of text? How strange.

Yes. And what's wrong with that? The IDSA has already stated it disapproved of
the Commodore emulation scene, what's to say that when ELSPA and FACT get in
on the act they won't try and get rid of the illegal part of the Spectrum
emulation scene here? Both are 8-bit computers.

You seem to have an inaccurate definition of "spamming". You also seem to be
blissfully unaware of the standard protest method known as the "letter-writing
campaign". CLEAR is advocating a letter-writing campaign in the traditional
manner: asking people to send letters to the IDSA, and providing a template
letter for people to use if they wanted to. All that differs from the
traditional letter-writing campaign is that the letters are being sent by
email rather than snail mail.

So you're saying that if WoS is forced to remove all snaps it hasn't got
permissions for (about 95%), then it will still remain as popular and as
useful as it is now? I seriously doubt it'll get the 60,000-odd hits a day it
gets now when the archive has been decimated.

That's right Damien, people should be allowed to say damaging things about
other people whether they are true or not...
So, about that proof...
>So, about that proof...
Unfortunately, Nick, you'll learn that once Damien fixes an idea in his
pretty little head, no amount of logic, reason or empirically-demonstrated
fact will shift it. Before putting the k-file on, I noticed him claiming
that Bongo "has 'his' mail directed straight to you" (meaning me), despite
the seemingly fairly visible differences between the email addresses
bo...@bingoandbongo.com (Bongo's address)
and
thumbs...@dial.pipex.com (my address)
Honestly, give up. The boy's a crazed Chapman-style stalker (his posting of
my office address and phone number is just plain vindictive evil which could
serve no possible purpose other than to have my business - and some of the
dozens of others in the building - crippled by nuisance mail and calls).
You're wasting your time with him, and having us both falling into his trap
by attempting to reason with him is simply giving him more respect than his
ludicrously obsessive conspiracy theories deserve.

Cool! Two people using Outlook express. What a coincidence.
OK, so the domain is registered to Stu, but that's about as
far as the connection can be made. He's offered a perfectly
reasonable explanation for this - so why the witch hunt?
>The mystery deepens...
But not very far, Adam. Having registered the domain for Bongo and not for
my own use, I obviously wouldn't want mail concerning it getting mixed up in
my own mail, so I set it up with one of my spare Pipex mailboxes so it would
be easy to automatically forward. (I wonder how Damien will manage to work
this bit into his increasingly elaborate conspiracy theory?) Had I been
trying to conceal any of this, it would have been simplicity itself to use a
Hotmail account or similar.

Why haven't we seen more of this Bongo-guy then?

Illegal part? You mean the pirated software? I have no problem with
that. It is their right to do so after all. I have no argument with
copyright holders protecting copyright - I'd rather they allowed
distribution, but if they don't, I'm not going to whinge at them.

Nope. The method described on the CLEAR website has matched every method I've
seen before: either email the organisation with your own email or use the
template provided. You want me to give you examples?

So you actually think it will still get 60,000 downloads a day when the
archive is decimated? Yes, the WoS site will still have value, but only an
idiot will say it would still be used as often as it is now. Once someone's
downloaded an emulator, they have no real reason to go back to the site in
future except for updates.
I find it rather distasteful that you're trying to twist my words into an
attack on Martijn, someone who I respect rather a lot.

I read it from an outsider's viewpoint, and proof is rather lacking. All I've
seen is a smear campaign, nothing more. You ignore trying to prove the
allegation upon which all others have been built on (that Stuart is
Rocketship), yet when asked to do so you say it doesn't matter one bit, so you
don't bother.
Pardon me for not being impressed one iota.
>And here's where the whole argument goes around in circles again, where I
>restate that the law is irrelevant unless the IDSA takes you to court, etc.
Oh nonsense. So I should be scared of being taken to court for being
called Damien, because I don't have the money to fight the case? Despite
no lawyer being dumb enough to try and go forward with such a case?
>So, say, Your Sinclair's Save Our Speccy campaign was nothing more than a

No idea what that was.

Want me to give you examples of people getting the post office to
*reject* identical mails posted to them? I believe it's unacceptable
either in real post or email. Individual letters are infinitely more
powerful.
>So you actually think it will still get 60,000 downloads a day when the

Used often != valuable.
Or are you saying the most valuable sites on the net are the porno
ones?! :)

No, I didn't twist your words at all. I quoted them, and said what I'd
feel if I was Martijn. I apologise if you believe that is twisting your
words, but it isn't.

That's an old allegation. In case you hadn't noticed, it moved on.

Incidentally, viewers, I note that where Damien's page previously
categorically stated that I definitely *was* CLEAR, it now merely states
that Damien "suspects" this to be the case.
What's up, Damien? That "proof" not quite solid enough after all, was it?
First, you back down on me being Rocketship (still waiting for an apology
for that particular set of scurrilous accusations), now you're backing down
on me being CLEAR. Ever thought of a job in government?
(Think I'll take that killfile off and wait to hear the reply to this one.
Should be good.)
What CLEAr provides is not a template - it is a complete copy of a letter
together with the words "Cut-and-paste this letter and send it to IDSA -
5 seconds of effort to help save the whole emulation scene" in capitals.
If that's not encouraging people to send lots of identical letters I don't
know what is.
I should think most PR people are well up on mass-mailing campaigns and
mostly ignore them. Making the letters all different might help to avoid
this. I also think a lot of the text in the sample letter is useless as it
is directly contradicted by the IDSA FAQ.

From CLEAR's web page:
<begin quote>
Below is a sample letter, explaining in calm, rational language why IDSA's
actions are self-defeating, short-sighted and counter-productive. Below that
is a link to their email address. If you cut and paste the sample letter, or
******************
simply use its points as a general guide for a totally different letter,
adding or subtracting any thoughts of your own that are relevant (PLEASE don't
******************
flame, as it'll only harden their attitude), and mail it to them, it's very
possible that we can get them to stop throwing their weight around in such a
clumsy and irrational way. Believe me, they're certainly NOT going to ignore
the feelings of thousands, even hundreds of thousands of gamers - it's simply
not in their interests to do so. Isn't it at least worth a try?
<end quote>
In other words, mail this letter, or use parts of it in your own. Just like
every other letter-writing campaign. True, it might not solve anything, but
these things have been known to work - if we decide to do nothing now, we've
already admitted defeat.

It's a way of stopping messages from a certain person, or on a certain
topic, from appearing on your news server. It's a really crap thing to have
to do (which is why I've only done it once in four years), but when you've
already had 50 or 60 attempts at reasoning with someone and they refuse to
listen, sometimes you have to just switch off.

In which case your ISP has not registered the domain correctly with
internic, as they have not used the full postal address. Unless you
have post delivered to pigeonholes, which I find hard to believe.
I would have expected more from Pipex. Then again...
Does anyone here work for Pipex? Can you check the mail setup for us?

Not even so high-tech - it comes straight in through the main letter box
"sorted" by the Post Office in elastic bands according to addressee/company.
Since I'm the only person in my "company", there's no need to clarify the
address any further, so in fact it's perfectly "full". Any remote danger of
getting back to the point, which I seem to recall was something about Speccy
gamesites being closed down?
Oh, never mind.
It's a bit like an X-File, only without the will-they-won't-they tension

Rented office units? 300 people? Must be a bugger sorting all the mail
out in the morning then. 4 Brock St. No clue about which unit there, is
there? Or do you 300 all know each other really well?
You make me laugh, you really do.

Oh great. Scary stalkers outside the front door now. Just glancing out of
the door, other businesses at this address include Tig Comms, Bath City Lets
(which alone receives mail addressed to many dozens of different people),
Art Of Africa, an unnamed Reflexology Clinic and PJ Palmer, Architect. Feel
free to look them up or call Directory fucking Enquiries.
>At least we seem to have confirmed that Mr Campbell, Bingo And Bongo, and
>Rocketship work out of the same office block even if they are unconnected.
God Almighty. "We" haven't "confirmed" that at all - the ONLY Bingo And
Bongo connection to this address is that they use the domain I registered
for them as a favour, and which is hence registered to my office address. I
actually have no idea whereabouts in the country they are.
Posting abuse on newsgroups, posting lies on websites, posting my address
and phone number in public, and now encouraging people to come and nose
around my place of business... this is beginning to border on harassment.
Remind me never, ever to support any efforts to save the Speccy emulation
scene again. Furthermore, if I find any of you outside my door, be warned

looks like a normal street to me. Basement Flat, 4 Brock Street and
4 Brock Street as separate addresses...
Still not convinced myself. I've always had respect for Stu and the
AP gang.
Seems to me that the easiest solution would be for anyone reading this
who lives in Bath to go 4 Brock St and find out whether it is an office
block - and, if it is, to see whether there is a list of businesses which
currently occupies it.
Failing that, if anyone has a post code searching program, see what comes
up for "BA1 2LN". If the building is a big office block it should probably
have a post code to itself.
At least we seem to have confirmed that Mr Campbell, Bingo And Bongo, and
Rocketship work out of the same office block even if they are unconnected.

Elastic bands? Oh come now. Any modern business-person, as I'm sure
you are well aware, has replaced all use of elastic-bands with the
much less-practical and more environmentally unfriendly plastic mega-
paper-clip. (Y'know the really big ones, with the cool bright colours.)
It enables the letters to fall-out, become misplaced, or even enables
the aquisition on other unrelated letters if it's together with other
bunches of 'em. And, most importantly, they're really really big, and
really really bright. (It's one of those things that is irresistable
to modern authoritarian male-dominated management... basically it's a
male-thing. ...I doubt the Post-office could resist this.)
</utterly missed point>
> Oh, never mind.
Well, I didn't, until you mentioned those elastic-band things.
Honestly. Where would our economy be with all this unchecked
use of elastic bands. Bankrupt I tell you! Now those big paper
clip things, you can't go wrong with those...
(Um, what was that point you mentioned again?)

Which is good enough for me.... The evidence is building up, and I have
to say I am amazed by the amount of 'benefit of the doubt' that people
on here are willing to give...
What's next? "I never posted that, BingoandBongo must have broken into
my 'office' and posted from the same PC?
The minute Rocketshit were mentioned as having ANY connection with this,
I was prepared to believe Damien, and I think people have been a bit
harsh on him, after all the work he has put in on this - does anyone
here really want to take the risk of being associated with Rocketshit,
someone we KNOW to have been making a profit from selling illegal CDs,
on a 'Save the emulation scene' crusade?
The onus is not on Damien to prove the association, but rather on Stuart
to disprove it, for me the series of 'cioncidences' is just a little too
much...

Hang on - Damien has already admitted that I'm NOT Norman from Rocketship.
We've also seen that there's absolutely no evidence of ANY connection
between Bingo and Bongo and my address other than the obvious one that *I
announced myself 50-odd messages ago* (I registered a domain for them to
use - since I can do it for free, as a favour - which would then OBVIOUSLY
be registered to my address). I've NEVER tried to hide the latter fact - I
brought it up a LONG time before Damien "discovered" it. Pretty slim
"evidence", really, isn't it?

No it isn't. I've done nothing wrong and have nothing to "defend". I've made
no allegations. You shouldn't call people thieves and liars and then not be
able to prove it beyond the odd tenuous and feeble coincidence. Damien knows
this perfectly well, which is why his website now hides behind weasel words
like "suspect". He's also offered not the slightest possible reason why I
might be doing all these bizarre and contradictory things. He's an idiot,
but you're the bigger idiot for believing his paranoid conspiracy theory.

It is much safer to say that "I think that you are a lair", instead of
saying "That you are a lair".
And I think that you started this ISDA thing being Bongo, and that the sole
purpose of this thread and CLEAR is to damage the Spectrum Emulation scene.

Right, so one day, someone wanders into your 'office' and says "Hi, my
name is Bingo and Bongo, please set me up with a domain name for free as
a favour, and redirect my mail to one of your accounts. I am not telling
you my name or anything else about me"
and you said "Okay mate, no problem"
Fair enough, maybe you are a really nice guy after all, always happy to
meet new people and help them out in any way that you can....
oh wait a minute, what's this...?

That is quite stupid then. what are you going to do if bingoandbongo
appears to be involved in illegal activities like distributing pirated
software?

Type in bingoandbongo and hey presto everyone has your adress. So go sue
Internic will ya for providing the public with that adress. And by the way
there is only a court-order that could prevent me getting near your office,
or Brock St. has to be private property.
BTW: Some a rather intresting point from the regulations of Easypost.com
where bingoandbongo is located:
"Your login account is for your personal use only" And you don't even know
the whereabouts of Bingoandbongo in your own country, yet you was willing
to set up that account for them under your own name.

No no no no no. Innocent until proven guilty and all that. Until
someone (other than Stu, natch) can check out the address in Bath,
you're all jumping the gun. Bath is full of tall buildings which
may have once been "individual" houses but are converted to
offices. Future Publishing seem to occupy half of them...

Ooooh no. Elastic bands. You can't fool with tradition. Office spods
the world over are constructing huge elastic band balls from
each day's post, ready for when the time comes to throw them out of a
high window and see how high they bounce.
Paper clips indeed.

Nope. The only person who has shown threatening behaviour is you.
And it's not as if anyone has posted your home address in Radstock
now is it?

My mistake. I appear to have got a little carried away there.
So do you actually know who "Bingo And Bongo" is? If not then why are you
so trusting of them? If you do then you might like to suggest to them that
CLEAr would probably have a bit more credibility with the IDSA if it were
fronted by a real, onymous person. What is Mr Bongo so afraid of that he
hides his identity like that?

Really. And how will you know who we are? And what business of yours is
it if I decide to nip down to Art Of Africa to look for some Christmas
gifts?

I am well aware of what it says. However, the text I quoted is in capitals
in a large font and, human nature being what it is, I suspect that the
majority of visitors to that site will take the "5 seconds" approach
rather than the one that is more likely to make a difference.

As I have already proved, "Bath City Lets" are at that address (don't
know about the other ones Stu mentioned; I couldn't find them), and
unless that *is* where he works I see no reason why there can't be
other companies at the same address.

Goodness me. Someone who actually listens to the facts, at least.
>So do you actually know who "Bingo And Bongo" is? If not then why are you

Because I've so far had no reason not to be. Also, since the domain is
registered to me and I know all the (unchangeable) passwords etc, I can
exercise control, to the extent that if any monkey business starts which I
don't approve of, I can simply shut the whole thing down at a moment's
notice.

You'd have to ask him.

Well, we'll all just have to take that chance, won't we?

In fact, two people, and an IRC chat room (#mame) rather than my office.
>name is Bingo and Bongo, please set me up with a domain name for free as

I do know their names, and I knew what they were doing. They didn't ask for
the domain, I offered it in support of the campaign, as my contribution to
something I thought was a good idea.
