Has anybody ever noticed that in the movie Congo, the main actress
carries an "SGI" laptop? (The logo is just beneath the display.)
I'm sure it was just made 'for' the movie, but if you know otherwise I
would be interested in hearing about it. Maybe this is old news to
everyone, but I haven't heard anything about it.

Well known. A firm did a one-of-a-kind packing of an Indy. The firm
specializes in custom cases. The firm's name and contact info
is in the archives, search http://www.sgi.com/Archive/comp.sys.sgi/

There are no commercially available laptops which could be called "SGI
laptops". I use the term "commercially available" because I'm sure if
you threw a mountain of money at some company, they'd be willing to
custom convert one of our machines into a "luggable" configuration.

I have seen an SGI machines cased in a large briefcase, sold by a third
party.

I would love it if SGI would fineally produce a laptop!

I've been waiting for ages to buy a computer for my own
personal use. The Indy is great but just isn't portable
enough. I hope they come up with one soon. Has anyone heard
any rumours? Isn't there a smaller than Indy machine coming
out soon?

Maybe SGI should buy Apple and gradually merge Apple stuff
with SGI (or run both together)! They've filled the top end
of the product line nicely with CRAY, now they need to fill
the bottom end. Or is Apple too much of a competitor?

Max.

Wasnt that setup in Congo just a Indy with the Indy Presenter
Flat-Screen Monitor? I dont remember seeing the Indy's, but I
definately recognized the Indy Presenters. The Presenter is a TFT
display that also can be used in conjunction with a standard overhead
projector.

Yeah, why not SGI-notebooks:

The core (I mean, we buy SGI's for the graphics...) is
somewhat violated using TFT screens I guess; but what about
hooking notebooks to docking-bases with normal screens (and/or
the *real* graphics)?

Walter

I seem to remember seeing something of a logo SIMILAR to Sgi's below the
screen, but its hard to say. Was the Laptop bluish, like the indy?

Congo was supplied with computers by SGI, just like Jurassic Park.
Unfortunetly, nothing compares with the control room in JP. Methinks that
the 'notebook' in Congo was just a presenter-panel and indy shoved into a
hardened metal case. The computers in the 'control room' back at their HQ
were SGI's too, but, alas, they were nothing compared to the SGI's in JP.
(The main reason I got one in the first place.)

Does anyone know exactly what this 'laptop' was? Was it really portable?
Did it run on batteries etc? What screen did it have?

Max.

Totally Hollywood! The whole thing was faked.

The "laptop" in Congo was just an Indy Presenter screen with a custom (extra
bright) backlight. The way the shots were taken, one can't see the Presenter
cable coming out from the back of the unit. The reduced keyboard (not the
standard 101 PS/2 keyboard) and "trackpad" are totally nonfunctional.

The custom backlight was powered by a AC adaptor/transformer thing. Once again
the film shooting eliminated the viewer from seeing this power cord. There are
three "activity" lights (red, yellow, green) that were simple LEDs powered by
a small battery onboard (that was the only power source on the unit itself).

The case itself is a sturdy plastic shell made to match the Indy Presenter.

Hope this enlightens.

someone from sgi told m that the sgi's in JP control room were actually empty boxes because they
made to much noise for the movie set. the computers were actually in the next room. If you caw
computer lights in JP then they were prob a fake like the fake led light powered by an internal
battery inside of the congo laptop.

ohhhh.. too bad cause SGi could really use a Laptop :)
I'd have one the second they were released.

No. The CM5's from Thinking Machines were empty boxes with lights.
The SGI systems were real, with a custom video output to sync up to the
movie camera's 24 FPS, so there would be no rolling flicker.
