I often have to ftp large numbers of files between two machines
on opposite sides of the continent. They are both SGI systems running
Irix 5.2. I use "mget" with prompting disabled to retrieve the files,
but after a while (usually about 15 files or so), the ftp connection
breaks. I have to reopen the connection several times just to get all
the files I need, but this is a real hassle when the command is "mget *"
and I want to resume partway through the file list, and not recopy
everything again. Any ideas on why this is happening? I never noticed
this problem with Irix 4.X, so it doesn't seem to be network related.

You need the ftp patch for IRIX 5.2. My records seem to indicate that
this is patch SG000041; there may be a newer update to it since then.
Unfortunately, you will have to ask the TAC for a copy of the patch,
as SGI currently feels it is necessary to grill you to prove you are a real
SGI owner and that you really are having the problems you claim :-(

If you have not installed any patches before, you will need patch 34,
which is a bit messy to install. I would also suggest picking up patch 65.
patch 65 is an important security fix; SGI has made it and patch 34 available
in ftp://ftp.sgi.com/pub/security .

The same problem exists under IRIX6.0. What is the appropriate patch number?

Sincerely,
