We have good experience with the HP Ultrium 215 (LVD/SE, "slow version"
7,5 MB/s native) in a Qualstar 8111 (one drive, 11 slot robot) on an
Origin 2k, using the tpsc driver.
No problems with the drive or tapes yet, it's just that the drive needs
cleaning (LED indicator) after some 8-10 tapes. I am still looking for a
way not to interrupt our backup run, because restarting xfsdump (after
inserting a cleaning tape) takes 2 extra-hours for us.
As long as you have a Storage system that can deliver/accept the
bandwith, this is a formidable tape drive. Depending on your data, you
may have to move 7,5 - 15 MB per second, plus compression gain. For us
the compression is around 45%, yielding ~10 MB/s on Model 215 (~21 MB/s
on Model 230, but I cannot verify this). If you have to backup _amounts_
of small files, this could become a possible constraint and you could be
better off staging to a Disk before going to tape.
No experience with that drive on IP19/21/25. I guess the FW/SE bus would
allow a single 215 device per bus.
