Hi

I have a Linux 2.4.19 based NFS server and client , both having
latest XFS filesystem. But ACL changes are not propagating to the
client from the server thru NFS. I have NFS version 3.

Does NFS support ACLs? Is there a separate patch i need to use? Also
if do setfacl from client, I get "Operation not supported".

Please help?

thanks

There is no standard ACL protocol for NFS V2 or V3, so Irix<->Irix -
yes, Solaris<->Solaris - yes, Irix<->{Linux|Solaris|HPUX|etc} - no.

Where were rumours about somebody working on ACL support in Linux NFS,
but it was in 2.5.

It was decided explicitly to _not_ deal with ACLs in NFS3 so that way the
NFS3 standard would get out faster.

There's an ACL weenies list (http://acl.bestbits.at/pipermail/acl-devel/)
that has various options for ACLs and NFS over ACLs, some in the Linux 2.4
context. The big issue isn't really the NFS or wire protocol to exchange
the ACLs, but the filesystem or other backend being able to support ACLs.

You need both the XFS patches and the patches from http://acl.bestbits.at/
.. some work to get there but docs are well enough.

NFSv3 doesn't have an ACL standard. Actually, the POSIX 'standard' never
came out of draft for ACLs in the first place but it's rather common and
well-enough understood.

NFSv4 has ACL support in the standard more-or-less like the NT ACL model.
Although the Linux implementation is still quite immature but I understand
rapidly developing.
