What is the maximum flash memory card which works with the Psion 5
(classic)?
Is a particular brand recommended?

Ě'm using a 256 MB Sandisk flash (so its 256 million bytes :) ).
The 384 MB Microdrive HD is compatible with the S5, so CF cards of that size
will work as well.

Robert.

32Mb in mine, though it's not a new one - got it with the S5 about 3 years
back. Kingston brand.

The prices I've seen make a new 128Mb card a realistic proposition at around
UKP70 (about $100 or so), but it had never crossed my mind to check if they
work! I know the IBM Microdrive is incompatible with S5 - it's only for the
S7 because it's a Type 2 CF unit. The S5 can only take Type 1 CF cards.

Hope you still read this: I made a mistake!

The Microdrive is NOT compatible with the S5, because it's a type II card!
(I'm using a S7, which supports these cards).

My humblest apologies...

The largest cardI used on a S5 was 64 MB, also from Sandisk.

However, the capacity shouldn't be a problem. AFAIK, the S5 uses 32-bit
addressing, so it should be able to handle 2^32/2 = 2 GB disks. (The
division by 2 is because, ofcourse, the Psion must be able to create
negative numbers as well. So the total amount of numbers is 2^32.)
So the only thing to watch out for is the type of the card. You can only use
type I.

www.psion.com still states 20 MB as the limit, but that's just because THEY
don't have bigger cards. Sandisk doesn't have a complete compatibility-chart
anymore.
Too bad no one from Psion is reading these NG's to help customers... :(

I bought a bargain 32Mb this afternoon and it works fine. (I also thought
that maybe 20 Mb was the limit). Time to get the Opera browser!

I've been using a Integra 128mb card from 7dayshop @ 60 quid. No trouble
yet after three months.

Only advice would be get a card reader too, as backups take all night if you
have a lot of data on the card.

Which OS do you use on your PC? I tried a card reader as well, but it
doesn't work very well. When I write to the card using Windows Me, and check
the files on the S7, the files have the short DOS-filenames ending with ~1
etc, so restored software doesn't work anymore (crippled filenames). Since
then, I began using PsiWin again. I back up almost every day now, so it
doesn't need to make big changes...

I have to confess, that whilst I reccomend a card reader, I don't actually
have one yet!

Interesting problem though.
