I've been using my series 5 for about 2 months and suddenly I'm confused
over it's rom and ram.

I know my rom isn't full, but how to write to it ? is it used for the OS
processing only?

if that is the case then what I should be concerned with the my RAM only
right ? but having more RAM will not increase system performance with stuff
like cache storing etc. ?

the 8mb and 6mb thingy is confusing me. I mean all together I'll have 14 MB
right ? so after the space needed for system files, I should have the rest
all to myself and my files ?

I have quite a good understanding of conventional PC memory operation, but
this seems quite different, is there a seperation of primary and secondary
storage in the Psion ? I dun think there is a big difference between the
access speed of the ROM and RAM, so what kind of memory management methos
EPOC uses ? tables, pages.... the usual way ? Does it have any internal
cache memory ?

Rom is readable only memory
Ram is readable and writable momory..

There is no way to write to rom or modify it

You can only have ram to use for everything.. like cache, your own files, other
programs (other than the built in ones in rom), and some space for running of the OS
and program you openned..

you can simply add memory by adding compact flash cards..which is quite cheap in
singapore also.. email me if you want to know exactly where to get them..

There is not much to understand here. It is really simple: the ROM
contains the default applications. You can't delete them to create
more memory. You can't add applications to the ROM.

But, you can add applications to RAM memory. The RAM is also used
to *run* the programs in. If you add applications (or files, or
whatever) to the RAM, you effectively decrease the amount of memory
that can be used to run your programs in, therefore you can't run as
much programs at the same time.

Example: you have 8 Mb RAM. You add a few applications, say for a
total of 5 Mb. You now have 3 Mb left to run your applications in.
That is quite sufficient for normal use.

I hope this helped.

It's ROM. That means, you can't write to it "R"ead "O"nly "M"emory).
The ROM contains the OS and psions apps.

There is no cache.

Your psion 's got 8MB of ram. In there you put your data and all the programs
you install. Once that is used up, you have to buy a compact flash card to
put your application files there. However, for execution they will be loaded
into RAM, just like usual. There is no virtual memory.

Greetings!

So how do Psion do ROM upgrades then? Replace the ROM chip? Seems a bit
twattish.

Thus far they haven't. On the series 5 the ROM is on a "pop" out daughter
board, so it can be replaced.

The 3Fax and Travel modem are not Flash upgradable. Are you sure you're
not confusing Dacom Products?
