I kept my broken screen 5mx in case I need the cable for my mc218 some time
down the road. I bought the 218 for 60 quid, brand new) from someone who
knew no better.
Keep an eye on the auction sites and trading post sites
Dweeb.
Both POS and Psion (in the UK) seem to do repairs very quickly. I had my
5mx back from POS within 48hrs, and my work colleague had his back from
Psion in the same timescale. Both of us very happy with the service. As
far as remember (it was about 3 months ago), the standard makeover at POS is
slightly cheaper for most repairs (including new screen cable), but if you
need a new screen, the Psion is cheaper. Both less than GBP100.
Of course, from Holland the postage time/costs will presumably be slightly
more; but I still think you're talking about a few days rather than weeks.
Regards (and Merry Christmas)
Steve

If price is important you have a small keyboard on the Handspring Treo 90,
you can also buy a clip-on small keyboard for the IPAQ and HP models. If you
really want a Zaurus you can order one from the UK or special order it from
a dealer in the Netherlands.

See <URL:http://www.nvmax.com/cgi-bin/community.pl?num=1040534208> for a
review of the new Sharp Zaurus C-700 clamshell. Looks good, but I don't
know anything further. Just bumped into the link while reading slashdot.

Very interesting. Looks great. Unless a good Symbian smartphone comes
along before my Psions die, I will probably be upgrading to a Linux
PDA.

That is also the way I am thinking. I don't actually have much
hope for the phone based systems. They appear to be headed in a
direction that probably won't suit me (less than and dumber than
the 9210i). However I have three Psions on hand, and I'll
probably try to get a NetBook or maybe a Netpad (daylight screen
is important to me) as well. I can hold out for a fair while.

Im doing OK with my S7, 3 Mako machines, a single Revo and a
mothballed 5MX so it will be a long time for me ;-)
Ive played with the original (Linux-based) Sharp Zaurus. Its a nice
little box but the terminal app was unusable for me (screen is wrong
form factor for a terminal and you can only see 80 columns with the
smallest font!). I work as an administrator where using terminal is
needed.
The idea of being able to download and compile Linux apps is very
compelling. The Zaurus I played with had Opera and a wireless network
card which made it very nice for mobile surfing (we have public access
wireless nodes in New York!).
The Nokia 9290 has a *lot* functionality and is the proper form factor
for a keyboard machine - but its still not as compact as a Revo. Maybe
future devices from Samsung or Panasonic will be better?
Meanwhile, we have more Zaurii to look forward to (though Im
disappointed the keyboard Zaurus released in Japan only has 32Mb). It
appears Dynamism (http://www.dynamism.com/zaurus/index.shtml) is
selling an English version of this machine in the West.
>Yeah it would be nice if ever sold in the uk
No Sharp Zaurus in the UK?
I had a play with a 9210i over the holidays and it seems a nice bit of kit,
though admittedly quite 'beefy', someone needs to write a newsreader for it
though before I would take the plunge, I know it's trivial but I like
keeping touch with the groups when I'm away from home.
Trouble is I don't know the difficulties of porting something like Rmrnews,
i.e are Symbian and Epoc *so* different?. I mean Steve Litchfield has
ported 'Fairway' over I notice so it can't be impossible.
Regards,
Mike Dyer.
I found the porting really easy, although I didn't perhaps make *maximum*
use of the command buttons. Total time to port Fairway from the 5mx to the
Nokia 9210 was about 15 man-hours max, including all the colour graphics.
So, if RMR are listening, go for it! Main difficulty might lie in
negotiating all the new OPXs, etc?

Nobody has it unless you live in Japan ;-)

I don't know. There is no RMRNews for the Nokia but other apps by RMR
*have* been ported...

Isn't Fairway done in OPL anyway?

Given HP dropped their HP200LX, I'm not sure it would be good
news. However they have made some nice hardware at times, so
that might make life interesting. However they are not a phone
maker, and Symbian is aimed at phones. It seems an unlikely
combination. Where did you hear about it?

Yes and no. The Zaurus apps are pretty straight forward (all GUI
pen-based apps). But it doesn't hurt to know a bit about Linux to do
more advanced stuff...
