If you frequent these newsgroups you prob. find certain questions come
up time and (sigh) time again so I compiled a list off the top of my
head:
Q. When I use the backlight there is a weird buzzing sound.
A. This is normal for this kind of backlight - even my Motorola
pager's backlight has the buzzing noise!
Q. Can I use the IR port on 3c/Siena/S5 to control my TV
A. No
Q. Can I use the S5 with Lotus Notes?
A. See Time Technology's PsiWin plugin at
http://www.time-technology.co.uk Psion plan to release a full Notes
client later in the year.
Q. Can I sync my S5 with GroupWise?
A. See the PsiWin plug-in from Advansys Corp at
http://www.advansyscorp.com
Q. Can I use my S5 with ACT! for Windows?
A. See the PsiWin plug-in from Advansys Corp at
http://www.advansyscorp.com/
Q. Are there any free (GNU?) development tools for the S5?
A. No, though you can download an evaluation copy for the C++ SDK at
http://www.symbian.com This allows you to play with programming tools
on a PC but doesn't allow you to generate S5 binaries.
Q. Can I use my S5 to access the Internet through my PC?
A. Yes if you have NT and no if you have Win95.
Q. Are there any newsreaders for the S5?
A. No.
Q. Are there any FTP clients for the S5?
A. It is still in development, see
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Serge_S/psion.htm (also see
his ZIP archive utility for the S5 on the same page).
Q. Is there an IRC client for the S5?
A. No.
Q. Are there any other web browsers for the S5?
A. Opera Software are working on a port of their browser (Opera) to
the S5. http://www.operasoftware.com/alt_os.html
Q. Can I use the S5 to get CompuServe email?
A. There is no CompuServe client for the S5, however CompuServe now
supports POP3 email which works with the Message Suite.
Q. Can I use my S5 to get my AOL email?
A. No because AOL uses a proprietary email system incompatible with
anyone else. In other words AOL sucks and if you want Internet email
on your S5 then get a "real" Internet account.
Q. Can I use my PsiWin lead to connect to a third-party modem?
A. You need a null-modem adapter and prob. a gender-changer to do
this.
Q. I can't sync my S5 files with Organizer 2.0?
A. RTFM: See the PsiWin manual (page 54) for how to upgrade your
Organizer 2.0 to version 2.1.
Q. In Message Suite, though I move email messages from the remote
mailbox to my local inbox they always reappear when I next logon?
A. You must CLOSE the mailbox first before you logoff.
Q. How can I print to my HP6, there is no driver?
A. Use the LJ4 driver - it works fine.
Q. Can I zip/unzip files on my S5?
A. See "FTP client" question above
Q. How do I get ebooks for my S5?
A. Do a search for "ebook" on Yahoo. Look and ye shall find.
Q. How do I read them?
A. Get a copy of Vreader5.
Hope this answers some questions and keeps the trivial newsgroup
traffic low!
Cheers,

Consider these to be suggested additions:
Q. What's better? A Psion or a WinCE box? Do my shopping for me!
A. Well, here we're bound to say "Buy a Psion!". And to be honest, this
isn't really the place for such advocacy. Go to your local shops and
play with different machines to find which one is right for *you*.
Q. Psion (service, support, whatever) sucks!
A. This is a matter of opinion - some people have had great experiences
and no problems with Psion service, some people haven't. Posting this
sort of thing only leads to a "Doesn't!" "Does too!" "Doesn't!"
flamewar, so don't bother.
Q. There isn't a port of (package) for the Psion! This sucks!
A. If there isn't a port of whatever package you absolutely can't live
without, and there isn't one in the works, then maybe the Psion isn't
for you. Check before you buy if you really *have* to have specific
bits of functionality, rather than complaining at us when you find it
isn't there.

A. There is a Psion 5 emulator available as part of the programmers SDK.
Available from http://developer.epocworld.com/eval/freesdk.html
This only runs on NT4.0/W95 (see requirements on same page)
This includes the standard Psion applications. Generally, other installed
programs wont work unless you have versions that have been specially compiled
for the emulator.(Which is unlikely)
BIG PS: I haven't got a Psion 5 so this is just my understanding of the
situation! Could someone verify?

You (I??) could also mention that it is possible to convert your
backed up files now without having your S5 connected.
[snip] AJ thanks for simplifying the quest to find answers for trivial
questions. I'm sure that now this NG., will have more time to find solution
and answer questions to my and perhaps many many others reading this NG.
Just for warming up let me post these questions; 1) What is the reason for
not being to be able to fix the problems in synchronization i.e. 16 field
limit in data, non alterable structure in data after first synch., record
number limits and lenght limits, not being able to pick and choose which
fields will be synchronized? 2) Why calendar synchronization are so random
either of application the PsiWin now claims synchronization. 3) Why in EPOC16
Symantec was or is able to port Act! With all its fields and functionality to
series 3a but in s5 after months of promises Symantec just dropped it? 4)Why
EPOC32 is incompatible with EPOC16? 5) Why I cant connect my 3a to s5? Yes I
know that one is 16 bit the other is 32, but so is Windows 3.x and Windows
95. Or is Symantec's Act! For Wince is not working on Wince2? 6)Why Psion
and its programmers unable (or unwilling) to explain these questions and work
on a solution which would satisfy all parties users, developers vendors?
After all MS., does fix problems, does listen its customers. At least better
than Psion. And we all agree that MS., is not the best in responding to its
critics or customers problems.

I hope that somewhat we long time (abused) Psion customers can get some
straight answers to our burning questions. Is that a false hope, is it
possible that Psion is even worst than Microsoft? Gabe

The best observation I can make is that the BSD Daemon logo
is _much_ cooler than that Penguin :-) (Donald Whiteside)
I'm afraid that you've not listened very well to those who've responded to
your messages as there are still errors and erroneous assumptions in your
questions. Secondly, you're piling non-related issues together thereby
creating "conclusions" that have no validity.
For example, take your question no. 1 : [Quote] What is the reason for not
being to be able to fix the problems in synchronization i.e. 16 field limit
in data, non alterable structure in data after first synch., record number
limits and lenght limits, not being able to pick and choose which fields
will be synchronized? [Unquote].
First of all, by mentioning synchronisation you're dealing with such
diverse applications as Schedule+, Outlook, Organiser 2.1x, Organiser 97
and Organiser 97GS. Organiser 97GS is a group scheduling version of
Organiser 97 and has a totally different data structure. The way data is
stored in Outlook and Schedule+ has also undergone changes. You can't treat
all of these PC packages as being the same, you'll have to look at each
package individually.
Secondly, there's not 16-field limit in Data and I've got a 19-field Data
file to prove it.
Thirdly, the PC applications have some data types and capabilities for
which there's no equivalent in Series 5 Data. Some fields are therefore
difficult or even impossible to synchronise as the original format would be
lost.
Fourth, I've set up the synchronisation for a friend of mine (Organiser 97
<--> Series 5) and could select some fields in favour of others.
Take question no. 3 : [Quote] Why in EPOC16 Symantec was or is able to port
Act! With all its fields and functionality to series 3a but in s5 after
months of promises Symantec just dropped it? [Unquote]
That's political rather than technical as Symantec struck a deal with
Microsoft regarding a version of Act! for Windows CE. The same has happened
with Intuit's Quicken. There were announcements made regarding version for
the Series 5 which were quietly withdrawn before the deal with Microsoft
was struck.
Take question no. 4 : [Quote] Why EPOC32 is incompatible with EPOC16?
[Unquote]
EPOC16 was written for a 16 bit architecture based on embedded NEC V30
processor which is a "clone" of the Intel 8086 CISC processor. While The
architecture of EPOC32 is based on the ARM 7100 RISC processor. The two
therefore relate to each other as a Honda motorbike to a Honda car.
Take question 5 : [Quote] Why I cant connect my 3a to s5? [Unquote]
You can and even transfer files using the Comms application on both
machines.
Take you remark added to question 5 : [Quote] I know that one is 16 bit the
other is 32, but so is Windows 3.x and Windows 95. Or is Symantec's Act!
For Wince is not working on Wince2? [Unquote]
First, Windows 95 has been designed to run Windows 3.x applications. Which
is difficult in itself but made easier by using the same Intel hardware
architecture. While the hardware of the Series 5 is not the same as that of
the Series 3. You could create a Series 3 emulator but that would take too
much memory and processing power to make it a practical solution.
Secondly, Windows CE version 2.0 is an extension of Windows CE 1.0. In
other words, Windows CE 2.0 equals Windows CE 1.0 plus enhancements. As
long as Microsoft hasn't made modifications in the API calls Act! uses, you
can run Act! on both Windows CE versions. Just like you can use WordPerfect
5.1 on DOS 5 and DOS 6.x.
Take your question no. 6 : [Quote] Why Psion and its programmers unable (or
unwilling) to explain these questions and work on a solution which would
satisfy all parties users, developers vendors? [Unquote]
A number of these issues have been explained to you more than once. I'm
afraid you're very much focused on the word "EPOC32" and forget that the
Series 5 should be placed in a wider context than it's operating system
only.
I understand you wanted to run a version of Symantec's Act! on the Series
5. Which is fine but the best thing to do is to wait until not only the
hardware (Series 5) but also the software (Act!) is released. Only then are
you able to have a good look at the combination and judge if a purchase is
worth your while.
Last : [Quote] I hope that somewhat we long time (abused) Psion customers
can get some straight answers to our burning questions. [Unquote]
I'd like to remark that you're not speaking for me. I've used Psion
equipment for almost three years now and am pleased with their
functionality and performance. Sure, I'd like to see some enhancements
made. But what's missing has not prevented me from purchasing nor have I
totally outgrown Psion's products yet.
