the news is out there on compuserve and it's sad news....
compuserve has introduced new mail system (yes, finally they get the idea
that 100525.364 is not a very nice address) and this mail system will no
longer be ASCII terminal mode compatible.
Which simply means you cannot use READCIS anymore :-(((((
I have used readcis for a long time and I really do love it, but what is
the future? Currently there is the choice to use the old or the new
mailsystem on CIS, but I am afraid, they will phase out the old system
soon.
If you want to read on the new system GO SMARTRULES on CIS and read the FAQ.
Is READCIS going to be adapted to the new system? I need to use
compuserve, because I need a mail system that I can reach internationally
from almost any phone in the world without paying hideous long distance
charges.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks,
Bernd
If this is the case then my compuserve days will be over as I use it for
exactly the same reasons and ONLY for those reasons.
Possibly the only hope is that 'Psimail Internet' may work with
Compuserve when it is released.

They have had info about the new mail system out for just about a year
now, and they haven't made an attempt to force people off of the new
system yet. I wouldn't worry about this too much...

Yes I did read a message on Compuserve that the new Psion
(internet)mail will work with (and only) Compuserve. (Release in
December?)

PsiMail Internet is shipping with a Compuserve NETWORK services account -
NOT Compuserve INFORMATION services account. CNS are a worldwide TCP/IP
network ISP (who also provide the backbone for CIS). You will NOT be able
to use PsiMail Internet to access a CIS account.

Maybe, maybe not... I have no idea.
On the other hand: the good news is that PsiMail will work with Compuserve
very soon (December normally). Check out http://www.psion.com
for more details!

Call me Mr Cynical, but with the release of PSIONs new Internet /
Email package, and it's tie in with Compuserve (see the press
release), I could quite easily see the old mail system disappear.
Undoubtably people would defect from CompuServe, to another ISP,
but they'd have to buy the PSION package, or give up their net
access via the 3a.
I guess it depends on the loss of revenue from accounts leaving
Compuserve vs the cost to Compuserve of maintaining two mail
systems. Of course, there will be other users of the old mail
account, but what percentage are PSION users? If we make up a
large percentage, this would make the transition far more likely,
from a cost point of view.
Of course I may be *completely* wrong, and I hope I am, as I find
ReadCIS and Compuserve an excellent package for my email needs. I
was just about to register for ReadCIS when I saw this thread.
I'm less inclined to pay for a product, if it's not going to be
supported in the future.
Watch this space, I guess.

|You could buy the new compuserve internet mail/web browser
|package announced on Psion's website this week.
The new package is an Internet package not a Compuserve one -- the two
are not the same beast since Compuserve doesn't really use any
Internet email system except when sending email out of Compuserve.

The PsiMail Internet deal is with Compuserve Network Services not
Compuserve Information Services. My understanding is that they are an
Internet provider separate from CIS. Having said this, I think the
move is a great one since it allows you to use the CIS access numbers
worldwide to send/receive Internet email and browse the Web.

You will be able to sign-up to CIN with the package or use an existing
ISP account. If you sign-up with CIN you will get a `personalised'
email address such as: aj...@psion.net

Actually two email systems have been use for quite some time -- ASCII
and NISA. If you signup with WinCIM you are on the NISA system by
default. You can however go online and switch back to the ASCII mail
system by logging on interactively with a terminal program.
I don't know how long this situation will last and now with the move
to TCP/IP they may not keep NISA for much longer either (which is
actually good news since the new PsiMail Internet product can then be
used to retrieve your email instead).
