Siemens have licensed the Symbian platform and are going to use it
in their future smartphones.

err.. But aren't they supposed to make PocketPC devices with Casio?
Looks like PocketPC and Palm have lost the PDA war and are
relegated to making phones.. or some such rubbish ;-)

CNN was reporting yesterday that Microsoft is set to announce major deals with
asian phone makers to use its "new" phone software (which the reporter
admitted is just a repackaged pocket pc software). They said that such
products wouldn't be arriving in north america for at least 1.5 years, but
might arrive in europe/japan in 6 months.

Two asian manufacturers were mentioned (I beleive Samsung was one of them).

I beleive Microsoft is mounting a PR war in order to give it the appearance
that it is winning. Seems to me like much of this is vapourware.

The one that I know is available is the Handspring Visor with the 1900mhz GSM
phone module. (Palm OS based).

Yes this is Stinger which MS announced ages ago and is their answer
to Symbian Pearl. They seem to be trying to rush it to market to
reduce Pearl's lead by as much as possible.

Actually I thought the other company is British and based in
Birmingham?

So what is new? ;)

They promise "great things" that they can never deliver on time but
it stalls the media when they look at the competition... people
then compare what's available in shops now with what they think MS
are soon to release... even though in reality it's months if not
years away.

And the Ericsson R380w (Symbian OS based)

In fact I thought the special edition version with the green case
was already available in North America?

Don't be daft. There's a clear difference between posting about a
Symbian licensee in a Psion NG and posting about PalmOS (With not
so much as a reference to Psion/EPOC) just to be snide, and more
than once you've ignored my observation that you don't post these
Palm/MS questions to Palm/MS NG's where you are more likely to
receive an informative answer.

MS and Symbian lost the PDA market to the PalmOS.
The last hope for MS is the war for the WirelessPDA/Smartphone market....
...however, i believe that MS will also lost that war to Symbian
or to PalmOS (if PalmOS evolves enough).

One of the things to note is that mobile phone manufacturers aren't
faithful 'until death us do part' when it comes to operating systems.
They're apt to bet on more than one horse. Or to change tactics halfway
the race. You therefore can see two phones from the same manufacturer
on shop shelves that have a different hardware and software platform
inside. Without you even noticing it because of shared user interfaces.

JF,

<< CNN was reporting yesterday that Microsoft is set to announce major

One of them is Samsung. They already have a Windows CE license and have
shown a Windows CE powered prototype about two years ago. Not that
anything came out of it. The other candidate is NEC.

<< The one that I know is available is the Handspring Visor with the

Well ... the Nokia 9000 became available in 1996, 9110 in 2000 and the
9210 has already been announced. NEC has had its NG-1, developed
together with Alcatel who had its own version of it. Then there's the
Qualcomm PdQ, the Ericsson R380 .... etc.

I saw Stinger at the M$ booth at the GSM show in Nice and it was very
impressive. An appointment could be created on the Stinger phone, and it
showed up on the desktop moments later. The demo also browsed both WAP and
HTML. It was a B&W screen, but it was very, very clear and easy to read.
