Are they compatible with each other? Can they exchange files to and from each
other, through seriel-kabel or Irda?

You have them in the correct order. The Series 3 is ancient now, released in
about 1991, I think? It had 256kB or 512kB memory and a small (160x120??)
screen
The 3a was released a couple of years later, it had a larger (320x240??)
screen, and upgraded software. 1MB and 2MB models have a built-in
spell-checker / thesaurus and a patience game. The 3a was the first Psion to
feature digital recording / playback of sound, with a built-in 'speaker and
microphone.
The 3c was released in about 1996. Some models have a backlit screen, all
models have an IR port. The case has a black rubbery outer coating, and again
there have been some software updates.
The 3mx was released back in August. The casing is back to hard plastic
again, and the processing speed has been tripled. Otherwise it's pretty much
the same as a backlit 3c.

They are all fundamentally compatible with each other. 3c and 3mx models can
exchange files with each other via IR, all models can exchange files via a PC.
In theory, two machines could be connected together with a serial cable, but
I've never seen such a thing!

Also different: the 3mx has a bigger backup-batteryand the contact-clips for it
are golden.
How could I have forgotten the golden battery clips? :-)
