Hi All,

Here in OZ the price of the Psion 5Mx has been steadily
dropping since December it is now approx $200 lower
than November prices.

Is this a lead up to a new Psion emerging from
the Psion?

Regards.......Liam

The price has been dropping in the UK too and I also think that a new
machine is a few weeks away

Which companies have been dropping prices? I haven't seen a Psion in
a Dick Smith or a Harvey Norman for ages, and the prices at PAWS
online have been astronomical and increased rather than dropping.
I'm not disputing your figures, but I'd like to know which other store
I should try to monitor (I'm a bit of of the way of major retailers
here, and don't tend to see price changes).

In the past it has been, but unless they are basing something on the
Series 5 based netPad that Psion Enterprise were working on, there
hasn't been much indication of anything except the ER6 phones.

I decided to go ahead with the purchase of a Series 7, since it did
what I wanted and I couldn't see any fundamental advantages to ER6 for
what I was using the Psion to do. This surely should mean a new model
with lots of neat stuff will appear next week!

Then so will the rest of the Psion community. MS & Palm new products
threaten to dominate the market unless Psion come up with something pretty
quick.

That's what we have come to expect from psion :-(

I believe that someone is capable of better products than wince/palm,
It could be psion, but they always dissapoint on timescales and
niggles with whatever is finally delivered ....

More likely it's Psion reacting to poor sales volumes as a last ditch
effort to keep their PDA business alive.

Yeh, yeh this song is old. What new products? Do you know something we
don't. Doom & gloom people have been saying stuff like this since I can
remember (1991, I had my first Psion), and yet Psion are still here.
You my freind have fallen into the oldest marketing scare tactic known
to man. "Hurry, buy now they won't last long". What info do you really have
that any product at all is threatening Psion any more than usual? If you you
weren't just guessing, maybe you can give us a stock tip, as surely you have
stock in Palm & Microsoft. In your words are about to "dominate the
market". Lets face it, you're displeased with Psion because they are not
personally following your idea of how to run a company (i.e. product release
intervals).
So be honest, you don't know any more than anyone else, about what is
going to transpire in the next 5 years in the PDA market.

Where is "here" ? PSION has vacated countries such as Canada and to a large
extent the USA. They have zero visibility now.

PSION pionneered the "smart" PDA market. At the time, they were the only game
in town. But now, Palm's got the lion's share, and the Pocket-PC/WinCe are
starting to gain credibility. Furthermore, conventional laptops are starting
to get small enough and with usable battery autonomy.

I can see PSION being squeezed from both ends. The Palm type of PDA from under
and the laptops from above, and now kicks on the side by the WinCE pads since
at the Compaq one.

And from a geography point of view, while PSION might still be strong in the
UK and europe, if it chooses to build phone/PDA combos, it will make it nearly
impossible for a company the size of PSION to re-enter the USA market because
PSION won't have the resources to build multiple phone intrefaces for the same PDA.

"Here" in this case means still alive and kicking.

it's heartening to know that doom and gloom merchants are not just
restricted to RISC OS though if they could only be moved to
comp.sys.moan.misc....the world would sound a better place! :-)
